GOVERNMENT SEEK TO CANCEL WOMEN, MOTHER AND THE FAMILY FROM THE IRISH CONSTITUTION VOTE NO ON THE 8TH OF MARCH! Joint statement by LFJI, Natural Women’s Council, Parents Rights Alliance, Irish Education Alliance & HTL: 1/2 “On 8 March 2023, the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, and Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman, announced the Government’s intention to hold one or more referendums to respond to the recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality and the Special Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality. The Government plan to hold a Referendum on our Constitution based on the “Citizens Assembly” recommendation that: “Article 40.1 should be amended to refer explicitly to gender equality and non-discrimination Article 41 should be amended, so that it would protect family life, with the protection afforded to the family not limited to the marital family Article 41.2 should be deleted and replaced with language that was not gender-specific, and obliged the State to take reasonable measures to support care within the home and wider community” We are strongly against the proposed amendments to our Constitution as we hold the opinion that this is a further attack on the biological sex-based rights of women and will enshrine gender identity ideology within our Constitution. We are strongly against the deletion of the biological woman and the term ‘mother’ from the Constitution, considering the hard won equality and rights secured for them over many years. Inserting a gender neutral term in the Constitution could also have unforeseen effects on policy and entitlements already enshrined in Irish law. ENSHRINING “GENDER IDENTITY” IDEOLOGY IN OUR CONSTITUTION? The Citizens Assembly at Page 8 of their Report state that: “…Gender equality is a matter of human rights, justice, and fairness. It must underpin all of our interactions as a society. The State has a special responsibility to treat all of its citizens equally, regardless of their GENDER IDENTITY, in compliance with Article 40.1 of our Constitution (‘All citizens shall, as human persons, be held equal before the law")…" At Page 12 of the report it is stated: “…Article 41.2 of the Constitution should be deleted and replaced with language thatis NOT GENDER SPECIFIC and obliges the State to take reasonable measures to support care within the home and wider community…" Article 41 of Bunreacht na hÉireann as currently formulated, reads: 41.2.1 In particular, the State recognises that by her life within the home, WOMAN gives the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved. 41.2.2 The State shall, therefore, endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home. The Citizens Assembly recommend that Article 41.2 be deleted and replaced with language that was not gender-specific, and obliged the State to take reasonable measures to support care within the home and wider community. This is in effect an attempt to cancel the important role of WOMEN as care givers and mothers by replacing “MOTHERS” and “WOMEN” with gender-neutral language. It is an attempt to cancel the fundamental concept in Irish society of the importance of women’s biological sex based rights and the role of mothers as enshrined in our Constitution. By inserting gender neutrality language it will provide transgender males with the same biological sex based rights as women. One has to question why the drive for the literal cancellation of women and mother given the already existing plethora of equality legislation related to maternity rights and the fact that our Constitution at Article 40.1 states that all citizens shall be held equal before the law" Continued below👇
