The national pooling of resources aimed at giving dignity to Kenyans at the bottom of the pyramid is such a forum for the power of our unity for the good of the country to manifest. While making his remarks at yesterday's Madaraka Day celebrations in Embu, President William Ruto weighed in the debate and emerged as the man ready to take the bull by it's horns. The narrative being spread that Kenyans can't afford the affordable housing program is untrue and a misrepresentation of facts. To know the number of Kenyans ready to own homes, just do a simple search of the now hundreds of companies that are venturing into the real estate sector, an indicator of an ever growing market for homes. The government's affordable housing program eliminates the loop hole of scamming and further, offers an extremely affordable and unheard of before mortgage in form of rent. I happen to have visited an affordable housing construction site in Rongai last year and interacting with the owner, a Muhindi, he lamented how by making the program a voluntary contribution had denied the country of achieving the dream of granting Kenyans a chance to own a home. The muhindi, whose family has been in the sector for 26 years also informed me and those we were with, that at that time when the construction was only 73% complete, only 12 units out of the 2500 units were yet to be occupied. Kenyans are eager to own homes and thus, the levy which just like NSSF, will allow government attract enough investors to accelerate the affordable housing program that never really took off, at least going by the numbers. Our nationalism, our enterprising nature and coming together in a national chama that the housing levy shall be the bedrock of attaining this self sustaining, economy spuring and job creating program. It's a win/win situation from whichever angle you look at it.
