In that letter I said I thought John Smith was a man of great integrity with a moral compass. The Labour Party could have done with him being around to this day.

In 1992 when the late John Smith MP was Leader of @UKLabour he kept Peter Mandelson - newly elected as MP for Hartlepool - at a distance. John was a good judge of character.
