Illinois has bled residents to other states for years, ranking third worst in the nation, and 95 percent of the people who left in 2024 moved somewhere with lower taxes. The state already carries the second highest property taxes in America, yet the 2026 budget piled on hundreds of millions in new taxes and billions in new spending, while Chicago alone has poured billions into housing migrants. New York is right behind it. The state posted the largest percentage population loss in the country, with more than 400,000 people leaving in a single year, and Governor Hochul has been reduced to publicly begging wealthy taxpayers to come back. California leads them all. A net of roughly 229,000 residents left for other states last year, marquee companies have moved their headquarters out, and the state now holds nearly a quarter of every homeless person in America while charging the highest gas prices in the nation. Notice the pattern. Their answer to every problem is the same thing that caused it. More spending. Bigger government. Higher taxes. Then they act shocked when families load up a moving truck. The Founders warned us about this. In Federalist 45, Madison explained that the powers left to the states were meant to protect the everyday lives, liberty, and property of the people. When a state forgets that and treats its citizens as a piggy bank, free people do the one thing they always can. They leave. That is the real verdict. Not a slogan, not a press release, but a U-Haul headed for Texas or Florida. You cannot fix a fire you keep feeding.
