Mallam Sa’adu Zungur, in his epic poem, “Arewa Jumhuriya Ko Mulukiya?” (“The North: Republic or Monarchy?”), which he published in 1950, ten years before Nigeria gained independence, wrote:
“Mun ci amanarmu da kanmu;
Mun sayar da ’yancinmu da kanmu;
Mun bar maras hankali ya shugabance mu;
Mun bar maras ilmi ya shugabance mu.”
Translation in English:
“We have betrayed ourselves;
We have sold our own freedom:
We have allowed the foolish to lead us;
We have allowed the ignorant to rule over us.”
In the heat of the pre-independence struggles - in which he featured prominently as a member of the NCNC, Mallam Sa’adu understood that the battle to salvage #Nigeria/#Arewa was on two fronts - against the white man and against a visionless Nigerian political class.
That was 1950.
This is 2025.
75 years later, what has changed?
Kebbi Governor, @NasiridrisKG, symbolises a deeply ingrained social and political malaise afflicting the #Arewa.
He is only a symptom of a disease, not the disease.
That video in Mecca, during #Hajj2025 only shows the new depth of the senselessness.
Unfortunately, few governors or political office holders in our region are any different from him.
Indeed, #ArewaAkwaiAiki but how many ‘Yan #Arewa even think we are in a hole that we keep digging deeper with our frail and impoverished hands?

@InibeheEffiong Wait... Who ask who for picture? Why does it look like you are the one taking picture with him?

I didn’t want to dignify this silliness with a response, but I’m familiar with social media and I know how this type of demonic posts can turn into something else.
My response:
1. I never knew the gentleman until we met on Thursday at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota.
2. When he approached me and requested for a picture, I did not know that he was Atiku Abubakar’s son.
3. In fact, I only got to follow him back on X after the protest.
4. Shehu’s privileged status only got to my knowledge when he said his father follows my public advocacies. Seeing the surprise or the lack of knowledge on my face, he mentioned his father’s name. This was when he was about leaving the protest ground.
5. I don’t have his phone number, and I never requested for it. Even if I get to have it later, it will not affect anything.
6. Despite being the son of a billionaire and a former Vice President, he joined the protest. Those who are making silly comments about the pictures have chosen to defend the incompetent Tinubu/APC regime that has imposed hardship on Nigerians.
7. The fact that some of these online mischief makers see the pictures as some kind of “Jackpot” shows how mentally depraved they are. If you think that some of us are outspoken because people in power have not tried to compromise us, then you’re mistaken.
Anyone who knows me well can attest to the fact that I keep a respectable distance from politicians and people in government, including those that I have some form of relationship with. I don’t go about seeking favours from the corridors of power.
If these people know the “opportunities” for self-gratification and offers that some of us have rejected, they’ll shut their mouths.
8. I have been taking pictures with almost everyone that approaches me during this protest to request for a selfie or picture. I don’t know when it became a norm to interrogate people about their identity before obliging them a photograph or selfie.
9. The insinuations made by APC agents because of my pictures with Atiku’s son are malicious, dubious and imagery.
10. You have nothing on me.
History will vindicate the just.
