People freaking out about Artemis “losing radio contact for 40 minutes” are basically announcing they have never learned how the Moon works. This is not a malfunction. This is not a crisis. This is not NASA “losing the spacecraft.” This is literally the most predictable part of a lunar mission.
When Orion swings behind the Moon, the Moon physically blocks radio signals. Radio waves travel in straight lines. They cannot pass through 2,000 miles of rock. Every Apollo mission had the exact same blackout. Artemis II is doing a lunar flyby, so it gets the same geometry. NASA planned for it. They scheduled it. They briefed it. They published it. They even explained that the blackout lasts about 40 to 50 minutes because the Moon is in the way.
During that time, the crew is not “lost.” Orion’s onboard computers keep flying the spacecraft. The astronauts keep working. Mission Control just cannot talk to them because the Moon is blocking the line of sight. This is called the “period of loss,” and it is a normal, expected part of every crewed lunar mission.
So no, Artemis won’t “go dark.” It will go behind a giant celestial body that blocks radio waves. That is not a scandal. That is basic physics.
If someone thinks this is suspicious, they might want to sit down before learning what happens when the Sun sets.

Just got this from Planet Labs:
Dear Tyler Rogoway,
Due to the conflict in the Middle East, the U.S. government has requested all satellite imagery providers voluntarily implement an indefinite withhold of imagery in the designated Area of Interest (AOI). Effective retroactively from March 9, 2026, Planet is moving to a managed access model, extending the publication delay for all new imagery within the designated AOI, and releasing imagery on a case-by-case basis and for urgent, mission-critical requirements or in the public interest. For the -media, this model is in line with the media policies of other remote sensing companies. We expect this policy to last through the end of the conflict.Access to imagery for the rest of the world is unaffected. These are extraordinary circumstances, and we are doing all we can to balance the needs of all our stakeholders. We will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as possible to minimize the impact on data availability to our customers. For questions regarding specific projects or to request a policy exception, please contact your Customer Success Manager or support@planet.com.We appreciate your continued partnership as we work to ensure our data remains available for responsible use.
Best Regards,
Planet Team

Can western commercial satellite imagery be trusted? I think there are good arguments to be made for delaying imagery. But if they will selectively restrict access, could they move to alter images too in the future? Their biggest customer is uncle sam in many cases.

I remember the first piece of advice I got on briefing President Trump in 2017:
He doesn’t read. Bring pictures. Only try to impress ONE thing on him. And if there has to be words, single page only.

Leavitt: "You always want to be the most well-read person in the room, and I try to be every day. But Donald Trump always is."

As a former spook I can tell you that the easiest low-integrity career path for former spies and intel goons is to become a "tell-all" writer that affirms every conspiracy theory as true.
This works commercially because people lap it up and it enables you to lean on your old career and esoteric "secret" knowledge, like a gnostic priest.
This works legally because none of its true, so none of it is actually classified, making it completely legal.
Nobody can prove that you're making stuff up, so your claims never get fully disproven; at best, you'll get "debunked" by Snopes or NYT, which nobody takes seriously anymore.
It is a pure grift career but one I've seen become lucrative multiple times.
Keep this in mind when you're dealing with politicians from the Influencer-Politician Era of the 2020s.

BREAKING: Senator Babet announces "you would be very surprised who's not entirely human" — but says he can't disclose more because the alien hybrid program is classified.

A beautiful book arrived today in the Netherlands. The postman was fast but not so fast as the SR-71 Blackbird. Thanks to Helion & Company for sending and Linda Sheffield (@Habubrats71) and her late father Colonel Richard E. ‘Butch’ Sheffield for the stories I will start to read.
