It's a very fraught question, Peter. The current VAD legislation is very specific around issues of capacity. Those with brain tumours (another not on my list of things I want) may also lose insight and ability to make informed decisions. I have missed the last couple of meetings, so I'm unsure whether this is being actively sought. I can see why people may think it would be a good option, but equally, the word "VOLUNTARY" implies much around personal autonomy whilst not allowing coercion from family. We would do a whole talk upon this 🙏🏻

Somewhere or other recently, David, I saw a petition re expanding Assisted Dying to those with severe dementia. It'd obviously have to come with many rock-solid safeguards, but if I was suffering from it, it's definitely what I'd want. Is that a growing movement in medical world?

@Peter_Fitz NSW has very robust and a well constructed VAD Program. James chose his own time and place. He will be much missed 😪😪

@janelaw47492107 @profesterman I’m impressed. I wish it was the same everywhere. Mum about to enter residential aged care but all they ask for is evidence of flu vaccination. They don’t care about Covid. I’ve kept my parents on six monthly vaccinations. Covid is a dirty word in SA.

Only 13% of Australians aged 75+ are up to date with their COVID booster. This is outrageous. Why aren't Commonwealth and State health authorities taking action?

@profesterman Most people aged 75+ are part of communities where Covid is only mentioned in past tense. Reporting of COVID outbreaks in residential aged care identified the risks for that group. Mum got Covid 3x in a MSU in 2 yrs. Who's willing to hear that? @AgedCareQuality @healthgovau

@profesterman Who receives PCR confirmation of COVID in SA in 2026? Anyone other than those living in residential aged care?

SA case numbers are rising rapidly. It looks like the start of the delayed summer wave. Year to date there have been <5 COVID deaths; last year’s total was 84. It’s too early to judge severity. The trajectory is clear, but the impact isn’t yet.

@BigBadDenis @healthgovau @Mark_Butler_MP @SamRaeMP Covid is airborne, MSU residents need support to isolate and most spend the day in close proximity to others. Who is going to care when the number of resident cases aren't reported? "Living with Covid" is cruel. Dementia doesn't make it any less so for our loved ones.

@BigBadDenis @healthgovau @Mark_Butler_MP @SamRaeMP Well, that's an incentive for Providers to care about Covid transmission in residential aged care - NOT!!! First govt stops supply/$ for RATs & PPE, now they stop reporting cases. So who is accountable for repeated C19 infections that cause misery and premature deaths?

"We analyzed lymphocyte subset data from 40,537 patients across three phases: pre-COVID, mass infection, and post-COVID.. During mass infection [with SARS-CoV-2], T cells, CD4+T cells, CD8+T cells, NK cells, and B cells dropped significantly. Even 20 months post-infection, CD8+ T cells remained 9.9% below baseline.. older adults and males showed prolonged lymphopenia. In cardiovascular disease patients, T lymphocytes remained 72.9% below baseline for 20 months post-infection.. Our findings redefine SARS-CoV-2 infection as a condition of long-lasting immune compromise." You may feel invincible against any pathogens and die quickly. I think we've let the damage that covid infections do to *linings* slip into the background of all the other problems that covid infections cause. I think this may be a *big* problem.

@LeiblerMark Australians can both mourn the Jews murdered in Bondi & protest the atrocity of Israel's ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza Anyone who can't accept that that's the natural human reaction to both atrocities has got a problem with empathy, compassion, humanity & morality

As the Liberals roll into a second week of rank political opportunism, it’s worth remembering this: Tony Abbott quietly did a deal with an MP that allowed controversial rapid-fire shotguns into Australia. The question is - who was the MP, and why the deal? I found out. 👇 1/2

It's difficult to be reminded that governments have installed clean air systems for themselves, but fail to mandate clean air for people living with dementia in residential aged care who have no control over the space they share with others @Mark_Butler_MP @SamRaeMP
tern@1goodtern

Your occasional reminder that your government has installed clean air systems in its buildings but you have to suck on exhaled dirt from the fetid lungs of your fellow plebs everywhere you go.

@BigBadDenis @Mark_Butler_MP @SamRaeMP Given the lack of interest in calculating excess deaths in residential aged care, maybe the govt could look at repeat infections as a rationale for better ventilation and germicidal UV in aged care. Unless they are okay with 3x C-19 infections in <2 years in an 87 yr old?

You failed to mention the aged care providers in SA who won't accept residents into a Memory Support Unit on a permanent basis without a SACAT application for Special Powers. How many people move directly from hospital to MSU? @PictonChris @k_eagar abc.net.au/news/2025-12-0…

The SDCP is an excellent model of care. However, aged care providers are now identifying more people with dementia as exceedingly the staffing, and skillset of their MSU (& want AN-ACC funding ↗️) How is this being addressed? @healthgovau @AgedCareQuality @k_eagar @SamRaeMP

SA recently opened a 3rd unit to care for people with dementia and complex needs, under the Severe Dementia Care Program. Each unit provides specialized care for 8 people, with a 9th room for people who 'bounce back' after transition to mainstream care. facebook.com/share/p/1AWi2M…
