Today’s #KUCancerFighter hero is Mary Beth Nelson, a 63-year-old from Tonganoxie currently battling Stage 4 Metastatic Triple Negative Breast Cancer. This proud KU grad and retired special education teacher was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and initially beat it. In the fall of 2024, a 2nd diagnosis came of Triple Negative Breast Cancer. After nine chemo treatments, a unilateral mastectomy, and four more treatments, she rang the bell victoriously on the 4th of July. Sadly, just two weeks later, scans showed the cancer had spread to her lungs. Devastating news, but Mary Beth has met her latest challenge head on with impressive courage, strength, and positivity. Mary Beth is a mother of three daughters and grandmother of two, and the youngest of seven siblings - one of which happens to be legendary Jayhawk Volleyball Coach Ray Bechard. Mary Beth looks forward to celebrating 41 years of marriage to her husband JD this December. She’s also a HUGE Jayhawk fan, having earned her master’s degree from the University of Kansas before spending 38 years teaching special education, touching countless lives along the way. Through everything she’s faced, Mary Beth continues to radiate positivity and find the brighter side of life. She has a heart full of laughter and a gift for making others smile.
