It’s incredibly difficult because these epics are vast, layered, and deeply revered; condensing them into a few hours often leads to oversimplification, loss of nuance, and inevitable disappointment among audiences. Instead, attempt developing character-driven narratives centred on figures like Bhishma, Drona, Abhimanyu, Ashwatthama, Indra, Indrajeet, and Luv-Kusha, situated within the broader canvas of the Ramayana or Mahabharata, but anchored to a clearly defined dramatic arc. As Telugu cinema, specifically NTR, demonstrated in the past, isolating a single perspective allows for tighter screenwriting, stronger character psychology, and greater thematic coherence. It preserves the epic scale as context while delivering a focused, emotionally resonant film that does not collapse under the weight of trying to encompass everything.

रामायण और महाभारत जैसे भारतीय धार्मिक ऐतिहासिक महाकाव्यों के फिल्म या सीरियल निर्माण में पात्रों की कास्टिंग की सबसे बड़ी भूमिका होती है। देखो, आप रामकथा आपने हिसाब से कई तरह से लिख सकते हैं पर फिल्मांकन एक अलग चीज है। उसमें भगवान राम का चरित्र निभाने के लिये एक ऐसा अभिनेता चाहिये जिसकी पहले कोई छवि न रही हो। या तो बिल्कुल नया हो या कोई जानता न हो पहले से। रामानंद सागर और बी आर चोपड़ा की जीत यही थी। एक तो उन्होंने पहली बार बड़े स्केल पर रामायण और महाभारत बनाई और अभिनेता वो चुने जिनकी कोई पूर्व छवि थी ही नहीं। उसके बाद उनके चुने अभिनेता/अभिनेत्रियों ने भी जान लगा दी अपना किरदार निभाने में। इस वजह से उनके सीरियल सुपर मेगा बंपर ही नहीं उससे ऊपर जो होता है, वैसे हिट हुये। इसके अलावा वो अपनी फिल्म मेकिंग में सरल रहे। ज्यादा तड़क भड़क नहीं थी। अगर आप रामचरित मानस पढ़े होंगे तो जान जायेंगे कि रामानंद सागर की रामायण के शुरू के एपिसोड के संवाद तक मानस की चौपाइयों का गद्य रूप भर थे। मैं उस पीढ़ी का हूं जब हम साल भर रामलीला का इंतजार करते थे और रात भर टाट बोरा बिछा कर रामलीला देखते थे। जहां ताड़का वध, परशुरामी, केवट संवाद, लंका दहन, अंगद संवाद विशेष आकर्षण होते थे। जो पात्र रामलीला खेलते थे, वो भले पीठ पीछे सिगरेट वगैरह पीते हों(मैं गारंटी नहीं ले सकता), पर यथासंभव सात्विक रहने का प्रयास करते दिखते थे। रामानंद सागर की रामायण और बी आर चोपड़ा की महाभारत के अलावा तीसरी बड़ी सफलता 2014 की स्टार प्लस की महाभारत को मिली और उसमें भी कास्टिंग ही एक बड़ा कारण था। भगवान राम का चरित्र कृष्ण से बिल्कुल अलग है। उनसे आप एक सहज सम्मानजनक दूरी बना के चलते हैं। वो पैदायशी राजकुमार हैं, अपने समय के दो धुर विरोधी ऋषियों से शिक्षा पाये और तत्कालीन तीसरे सबसे बड़े ऋषि अगस्त्य का आशीर्वाद पाया। उन्हें खुद का परिचय देने की जरूरत कभी नहीं पड़ी। स्त्री ताड़का को बिना हिचक मारा, अहिल्या को पुनः सामाजिक प्रतिष्ठा दी और बिल्कुल अनजान वानरों की सेना के प्रमुख तक बन गए। ऐसे पुरुष के चेहरे पर एक सहज स्वाभाविक रौब होगा, ओज होगा और आंखों में कृपालुता और व्यक्तित्व से शांत विनम्र और साहसी दिखेगा। इतनी खूबियां एक साथ दिखा पाना लगभग असंभव है। इसीलिए वो भगवान थे अरुण गोविल बहुत अच्छा करके गए और बेंचमार्क स्थापित कर दिया। रणबीर कपूर निसंदेह बेहद अच्छे अभिनेता हैं पर उनकी एनिमल मूवी अभी आकर गई जिसमें बोल्ड सीन भी थे और नशेबाजी भी। और भी कई मूवीज हैं उनकी जिनमें उन्होंने अच्छी एक्टिंग की। रामायण मूवी देखते समय आपको रणबीर कपूर को देखते ही उनकी याद आएगी। यहीं पर अरुण गोविल जीत जाते हैं। बस।
