Every day starts with safe water. “For women and girls, it means caring for entire families.” Yet, in Africa millions still go without. 🎧 @UN_Women Deputy Executive Director @vanyaradzayi calls for leaders to prioritize water resources: unwo.men/NBvT50YwwAY #WorldWaterDay

The Nobel Prize
The Nobel Prize@NobelPrize·
Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She started the Green Belt Movement to counter deforestation and mobilise African women to think sustainably. “Throughout Africa, women are the primary caretakers, holding significant responsibility for tilling the land and feeding their families. As a result, they are often the first to become aware of environmental damage as resources become scarce and incapable of sustaining their families,” she explained in her Nobel Prize lecture. “The women we worked with recounted that unlike in the past, they were unable to meet their basic needs. This was due to the degradation of their immediate environment. […] I came to understand that when the environment is destroyed, plundered or mismanaged, we undermine our quality of life and that of future generations.” Maathai thought of the idea for the Green Belt Movement in 1976 when she was serving in the National Council of Women. She floated the idea of groups of women planting trees to conserve the environment and meet the basic needs identified by women. It grew into a broader movement to improve people’s quality of life and promote democracy, women’s rights and international solidarity. It spread to other African countries. “So, together, we have planted over 30 million trees that provide fuel, food, shelter, and income to support their children’s education and household needs. The activity also creates employment and improves soils and watersheds. Through their involvement, women gain some degree of power over their lives, especially their social and economic position and relevance in the family.” Watch Maathai’s Nobel Prize lecture in full: nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/2…

No country in the world has achieved gender equality, yet more than half of the world's population are women. We need real and trackable commitments in meeting the needs of all women, including those w/ disabilities. To all women in their diversity, Happy Int'l Women's day! #IWD

@MATIVOTRISH A lot of content mining has been going on in Africa. They use that to rage bait and make millions. It was Europe with their mainstream media houses now we have Asian content creators mining content from Africa and it's absurd.

Leo #SautiYaMnyonge is a pedestrian captured at Allsops confronting a Wazito Sacco matatu driver who had invaded a pedestrian pathway while escaping a traffic jam on Thika Road. He is the hero of the day because he stood his ground, despite the insults thrown at him by conductors and told the driver to use the path meant for matatus. "Mochari haijajaa na Kaburi haijashiba,"Conductor told the man. "Kuja mchukue gari mnigonge basi," The man's response. #Brekko

Since it's international day of women and girls in STEM, let me share some facts about me, and hopefully encourage us to heavily invest in women/girls with disabilities in STEM! ⁕I have a physical disability as a result of a road accident, back in 2012 December. ⁕I paused school for 2 years, in 2013 and 2014 to adjust from the mental and physical trauma. ⁕Rejoined high school in 2015, and was the only girl in my class who did all three sciences (Chemistry, Biology and Physics). I also did Geography instead of history! By the end of 2015, I was awarded overall best in Chemistry and Biology, and the cleanest student in school (haha).  ⁕Completed my final high school exams (KCSE) in 2016 where I topped my class, with As in Physics and Geography. ⁕Joined undergrad in 2017 to pursue BSc in Analytical Chemistry, and A LOT happened in between before graduating in 2021 with a first class honors. ⁕I was the only one who got the first class in my class. And...the only girl who got a first in the chemistry department, out of 3 students! ⁕Joined University of Oxford in September of 2023 and graduated with a Masters in Environmental Change and Management, where I was keen to bring the voices of women and persons with disabilities in the Climate Space.  ⁕And...last year December, coincidentally on the same date that I was involved in the road accident (December 8), I officially registered an organization that educates persons with disabilities on issues around climate change, and it addresses other intersectional barriers related to gender, education and mental health. Climclusive works to enhance involvement of persons with disabilities in climate action, whilst strengthening their resilience around climate change. I guess I can finally say that I turned lemons into lemonades (haha)! Anyway, if it is anything I would encourage you to remember from these facts about me is; Women CAN, Persons with disabilities GREATLY CAN! Just be confident enough to support their participation by generously INVESTING in them so as to create environments which allow them to equally thrive! Thank you in advance 😊
