A convicted child rapist who served eight years in prison has been working as a DJ at parties, weddings and family events, prompting alarm from members of the public who recognised him. David Barrie Klein, now 56 and living in Carlisle, was found guilty in 1999 of indecent assault, gross indecency, attempted rape and rape of the same schoolgirl. His offending began when the victim was just 11 years old and continued for nearly two years. He was jailed following a trial at Leeds Crown Court, where the jury heard the girl describe via video link how Klein had “done something wrong to her” almost every week. After his release in 2004, Klein entered the entertainment industry, running a mobile disco business called Starlight. His website features promotional videos showing him performing at parties, including footage of young girls dancing near his DJ booth. It also includes glowing customer reviews from clients unaware of his criminal history. One review reads: “Thanks Dave for an amazing night, you were the best ever DJ at my daughter’s 18th, so attentive and accommodating.” Another customer wrote: “You did a great job and catered for all ages so that everyone felt included.” Klein advertises himself with upbeat audio messages and reassurances about his equipment and professionalism, offering events for around £150 per booking.
