Alright folks, those of you who've seen me posting #TSPart every now and then, here's the Python code to do it! After a lot of slaving away and fretting over small details and making sure it's beginner friendly, I'm finally comfortable to advertise it! github.com/matthras/tsp-a…

Nondimensionalisation feels like such an oddity in terms of mathematical techniques, there's no denying it's useful but I haven't figured out why I feel so /weird/ about it. Hopefully the answer will reveal itself to me in due course.

@suchenzang Yep. The recent news and discussion has generated far too much noise for any reasonable level-headed mathematician to want to deal with any of it. My applied mathematician colleagues are still minding their own business and working on other useful things not needing AI.

Usually I try to stay off social media in response to various world/political events because I can't stand the noise, but this is the first time I'm doing this because I'm so annoyed about the noise on recent maths/AI news. Sheesh 🙄

@dzackgarza They could be trying other stuff but only the successful results are coming from these areas so far /shrugs That's why I'm mostly unfazed at these results as an applied mathematician.

Kind of strange to me that OpenAI et al seem to *only* be testing their models against problems in combinatorial/analytic number theory. No algebraic geometry? Topology/homotopy theory? Algebraic number theory, arithmetic geometry? Just seems like a slightly niche choice

@leanyaritai Hugely depends on the topics. I'm in mathematical biology and there's lots of niche applications that many people wouldn't think much about.

なんとなく思うのが、数学って今後は個人から数名で論文を書いてどうこうみたいなのではなく、巨大なプロジェクトを大規模なチームで完遂するタイプの学問になるんじゃないかなということ。

I'm trying to do some nondimensionalisation and my brain keeps seizing up because "What do you mean I can freely choose what substitutions to make?!" Still a good exercise to break the minds of those who think maths is all about algorithms, though.

Today's Misheard: "bonferroni correction" as "bonsoni correction" Not surprised, the 'f' is a higher frequency consonant which definitely eluded my hearing!

Randomly stumbled across a clip of a doctor VTuber (Saiken M.D.) playing Doctordle and this is satisfying my lack of The Pitt and other medical shows. Diagnosis guessing games are always fun!...for me at least 😅 youtube.com/watch?v=iwx6ln…

If you'll excuse my nerdiness I finally got these belt buckles engraved with the aperiodic hat tile design! 😁 I had the idea and buckles for like more than a friggin' year and was really stuck on figuring out where to get the design on them and how to do it 😤

One thing I enjoy about Guy Mont's Spelling Bee shorts is thinking how /annoyed/ the subtitle editor must've been when editing the subtitles for accuracy for the homophone rounds 🤣 (This is why correct enunciation matters, guys!) e.g. youtube.com/shorts/OhjhH9j…

Monday morning: Woke up from a lucid dream where I was very angry at someone Tuesday morning: Woke up from a different lucid dream where I was also very angry at someone Wednesday morning: Woke up with a pulled muscle in my neck What's in store for me the rest of this week?! 😬

Of all random subreddits to be randomly recommended onto my Home feed, /r/GirlDinnerDiaries has been very pleasant: Women post a story with a picture of a recent meal that's just comfortably ordinary and home-made. Always nice to be reading about random people's fleeting thoughts

I'm legitimately so mad at this local place's cheesecake slice I tried today that was so dull, that I'm going to make one tonight for a colleague's PhD-submission-celebration thingy tomorrow 😤

Today I kept trying to find this particular rendition of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (~10min) to listen to. It's in baroque style, where the tuning (A = 415Hz) is lower than standard (A = 440Hz), which gives a very different yet mature feel. youtube.com/watch?v=QLj_gM…

@hopkinsmmi @michael_merrick I'm open to the idea but I can't see or imagine anything that works at scale so far. Like I'm talking 1500+ students in a first year undergrad maths subject.

@9NewsMelb @izzy_quinlan Subtitle is all they need, do away with sign language. What about the blind? What about the neurodivergent? What about the illiterate? This country is going down because of crazy diversity policies.

Thousands of deaf Australians could be left in the dark, with the country's only daily news sign language service at risk of being axed. #9News @izzy_quinlan

Wishing you were able to solve other people’s problems is admirable. Helping them solve their problems themselves is top tier. Trying to solve them when they’re completely able to do it themselves and they keep asking you to mind your own business is a sign of mental illness.
