Matt Jones had a great line in this week’s episode: “If you have the ball, you are the point guard.” Not by position. By responsibility. Discussing the value of offensive talk. 🎧podcasts.apple.com/podcast/slappi…

@DagsBasketball Having a more consistent language and terminology is what’s new… I think experimenting with the spectrum of how far into CLA is also thing people are thinking about now more than ever.

The CLA MOVEMENT Constraints Led Approach in basketball development has been getting a lot of buzz on social media the last couple years. From my perspective Constraints Led Approach is not a new concepts - when speaking with older coaches (and from my playing experience - using constraints are what the best coaches have done forever I.e. no dribble constraints, 5 on 7 press break, advantage/disadvantage situations, etc. So my question would be … is CLA new, or is the philosophy on going all in on CLA new? #basketball

@TomCrean Coach, how would you define “short steps”?

Tom Crean@TomCrean·
Coaches/Trainers You better have a Heckuva plan for 1. Tight Hips. 2. Short steps with the Ball 3. Short steps guarding the Ball or closing out. 4.Wasted Dribbles. 5. Short arming shots at the Rim. 6. Inflexible Shoulders to drop on drives and defense. 7. Fading in FT’s.

Hoping to start a thread where coaches comment their stops in the journey. I’d love to see what the average path of a coach is. 3 years as a student assistant in college. 1 year as a freshmen coach 2 years as a JV coach 5 years as a varsity head coach

Underrated Aspects of shooting the 🏀: 🔹MOBILITY🔹 - Ankle: Balance & Force Generation - Hip: Power Source - Shoulder: Alignment & Efficiency A player with great mobility in these areas = a player who raises their ceiling as a shooter vs. those who stay in their rigid ways

Off-Season Priorities: All the footworks, finishes, scoring moves, & decision-making become less important (and usually easier) when defenders have fear of catch & shoot opportunities. This Summer: Shooting Development —————— EVERYTHING Make the game easier…

Normalize giving 6’7”+ hs kids some grace as they grow into their bodies & figure out utilizing their size. The “why doesn’t he dunk that?” & “why didn’t he make that play?” crowd is not driving development. Many “bigs” aren’t playing their best 🏀 until they are 20+ yrs old…

@franfraschilla Respectfully, this is how the majority of NBA scouts treated me and others I knew when I was a young coach with information on high-level HS kids. Use you for information and then forget about you when you’re no longer useful for them.

My NBA international scouting friends are sick of the these young college assistant coaches texting and asking if a certain international player is good enough. They get an answer & the scout doesn’t hear from them for three months. Not a way to develop relationships. 🤷🏼‍♂️🏀👍🏼

@itsAntWright 2 minutes of layup lines as a warmup I can understand but anything outside of that is not game-representative in any way. There’s better stuff out there with more variability, decision-making, and dynamic movements - like in this clip.

@BobbyPfor3 I would refer to that as form shooting or calibration. Anything outside of that where variability is not a factor is what I was referring to.

@Mimster_ @MattJonesHoops Correct. Which is why I wouldnt describe spot shooting as a “waste of time” and gets “no improvement”

Scientifically Speaking: “Spot Shooting” 5/10/15 of the same shot in a row has *little to no* transfer to game settings or overall improvement. Neural pathways have to be challenged every few reps. So much wasted time & effort with these old thoughts. Variability is King

@WhatsGoodNyucka Agreed but variability has a wide spectrum - something as simple as changing where the pass comes from creates some level of variability. Also, if we are talking about 3-point shooting, I wouldn’t advise any player shooting high-volume if they’re inconsistent mechanically.

@MattJonesHoops I think shooting is in levels. Level 1 you need to be able to make absolutely wide open stand still shots with no defense at a consistent rate before adding variability, different footworks etc.

@buildbball All for form shooting “calibration” type stuff - spend time on it every workout.

@MattJonesHoops What about kids learning how to shoot correct patterns? With my higher level players, I completely agree unpredictability and variable approaches create much better results than just shooting 50 in a row.

@brianmccormick Common sense ain’t that common - throw the skill acquisition ideas on top of it and maybe it hits home for more folks. Appreciate the response - Huge fan of your work. Try to re-read 180 Shooter & Fake Fundamentals annually.

@MattJonesHoops It's not science; it's common sense. Don't think about neural pathways; just think about what happens in a game.

Simple Solution: Frustration with a lack of transfer or being a streaky is a common sentiment among players. Question: “Why is my hard work not translating to my % in games?” Answer: Limited Variability = Limited Transfer

Practice like a Game: Entering a mindless “Zombie Mode” while volume shooting at the same spot over & over with no variability is a norm. This is non-representative of a game environment where every shot is unique - even when attempted from the same area on the floor.
