In northern France, along the English Channel near the border of Normandy and Brittany, rises Mont-Saint-Michel, a place whose dramatic setting and abrupt rise from the sea immediately reminded me of Morro Rock.
It felt as if William Randolph Hearst and Julia Morgan had decided to build a castle atop Morro Rock, combining its striking natural presence with architectural grandeur.
Geologically, the two landmarks formed in very different ways. Mont-Saint-Michel is composed of leucogranite, created when molten magma cooled and solidified beneath the Earth’s surface. Morro Rock, by contrast, is the hardened core of an ancient volcano, a classic volcanic plug.
Their coastal settings also differ. Around Morro Rock, tides can vary as much as 9 feet. At Mont-Saint-Michel, the tidal range can reach roughly 46 feet between high and low water, among the greatest in Europe, transforming the landscape from open tidal flats to a sea-surrounded island in a matter of hours.
These distinct settings are further reflected in their scale. In terms of scale, Morro Rock stands at about 576 feet, nearly twice the height of Mont-Saint-Michel, which rises to 305 feet. Both are bordered by tidal mudflats, but the flats near Mont-Saint-Michel stretch out over greater distances, making its isolation and vastness more pronounced.
Historically, Mont-Saint-Michel is fascinating. According to tradition, in 708 AD the archangel Saint Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert of Avranches, urging him to build a sanctuary on the rocky island then known as Mont Tombe. After repeated visions, and, legend says, a hole burned into the bishop’s skull as proof, Aubert finally complied, establishing a small church at the summit.
Over the centuries, the site's spiritual significance grew. Benedictine monks constructed the magnificent abbey that crowns the island today. Its soaring Gothic design earned it the nickname “La Merveille” (“The Wonder”), and pilgrims once risked the shifting tides to reach it.
Its importance extended beyond religion. Its strategic position also made it a fortress. During the Hundred Years' War, Mont-Saint-Michel resisted repeated English attacks and was never captured, becoming a powerful symbol of French resilience.
In later centuries, political changes shaped the site’s fate. Following the French Revolution, the abbey was closed and repurposed as a prison. By the 19th century, however, its historical and architectural significance was recognized, leading to restoration and its preservation as a national monument.
Today, after all these transformations, Mont-Saint-Michel stands as one of France’s most iconic landmarks, a place where legend, medieval engineering, and the powerful rhythms of the sea converge.
Yet, amidst all this grandeur and history, what struck me most was something simple: schoolchildren, led by teachers, shoes and socks in backpacks, walking barefoot across the tidal flats surrounding the island.
Can you picture Central Coast school classes trekking across the mudflats of Morro Bay at low tide?

@NFL_DovKleiman Yeah. I think last year was the nail in the coffin for me. I’ll watch in a bar. Occasionally. Trying to juggle the services to watch at home is just stupid.

The masculine urge to get shot down in Iran and blast your way to safety with the suitcase assault rifle
I. Cox@IanECox
The downed F-15 pilots will be depending on this weapon to keep the hordes at bay while they wait for the CSAR teams to find them. The GAU-5A Aircrew Self Defense Weapon (ASDW) is a compact, takedown 5.56mm rifle designed for US Air Force pilots to use for survival and defense if shot down. Developed by the USAF Gunsmith Shop, it fits into ACES II ejection seats, allowing for 30-second assembly without tools to engage targets up to 200 meters.

This is what the downed pilot / WSO is likely armed with on the ground in Iran; the GAU-5A.
It's a mission specific takedown AR15 variant with a 12.5'' 5.56 barrel, MLOK rail with QD lever, MBUS Pro sights, folding grip, and 4x 30 round magazines that are stored under the ejection seat.
It's certainly a much better option than the USAF's old "survival" rifle...

@TailpipeBanana @Mrgunsngear @MidwestIndinc @Magpul Man - just a couple years ago, a downed pilot was limited to a sidearm. This is a win.
English

@Mrgunsngear @MidwestIndinc @Magpul Man, if I were stuck on the ground in Iran, it sure would be nice to have a suppressed 300blk with subs instead of a 12.5 with an A2 echoing for 10 miles through the rocks.
