Berkshire Hathaway will release its second quarter 10-Q Saturday morning. I fully expect to see a further MATERIAL reduction in its Apple investment. At 33x 2024 earnings, essentially no revenue growth over the last two years, perhaps 6-7% prospective long-term growth, little room for margin expansion and a seeming price insensitivity in repurchasing shares, only selling the position down makes sense, regardless of tax consequences. The first-quarter sale of 13% of Berkshire’s Apple shares reflects how good Warren Buffett is. Berkshire initially sold ~10% of the Apple position in 2020. Both Warren and Charlie subsequently stated the sale was a mistake and suggested the remaining investment would be permanent, one of Berkshire’s core “groves.” Three years later, Warren changed his mind, hard to do at any age, particularly having been so public with the sentiment. At age 93, by selling Apple, the GOAT not only changed his mind but remains at the top of his game. 🐐

Charlie Munger taught Buffett the power of buying a wonderful business at a fair price. It’s been the best path to long term riches. The current problem: everyone loves a “quality compounder” and it’s reflected in prices. That’s why we see better opportunities classic value.

@ViperChill Looking at that company I’m always struck by what a missed opportunity Ask was, it was really innovative for a time.

IAC's Dotdash Meredith just revealed that in the second quarter of 2023 their expert reviewers "rigorously evaluated more than 2,000 products". They also shared that their expert chefs tested or created over 1,500 recipes in the same time period. This is what we're up against. Dotdash Meredith revenue for the quarter was $414M, but singling out just digital revenue (a number of their brands are also print publications), they posted $212M for Q2, a 10% decrease year-over-year. They specifically mentioned traffic improvements for Investopedia, The Spruce and Verywell Health. It's my understanding that traffic was down for them overall YoY, particularly in Entertainment & Finance categories. Here's an exclusive for the next hour or two... I was on their earnings call live just now and they were asked about what they expect from search traffic going forward, especially now that Google's SGE has started including more links in answers. The first quote, "we expect both the historic Dash and Meredith sites to be increasing traffic." And another one, "The only thing I’d add to that is those platforms are built on a healthy internet ecosystem and sending traffic their fundamental business model is sending traffic out to the rest of the Internet. And what they’ve said and what I believe they intend to continue is doing exactly that and doing more of that every year. [..] It is very easy to imagine a scenario where they figure out how to use these tools to send more traffic out to the rest of the Internet. And again, that’s fundamental to their business model." I believe these two quotes can be attributed to Dotdash Meredith CEO Neil Vogel and IAC CEO Joey Levin respectively. Please don't quote me on that though because I was listening live and may have misheard, but did record the conversation for the transcripts. They suggested that Amazon Prime Day was great for them in terms of affiliate commissions but that will be part of Q3's numbers. 💰 Dotdash Meredith are one of my favourite digital goliaths to track because they're behind so many content websites (I monitor 48 for them at the moment). If anyone else cares about their numbers going forward, I'll keep reporting on them.

@googlecanada I guess I don't fully understand this. What's the difference between Google and Facebook linking to Canadian news websites and Twitter or Reddit doing so?

Berkshire’s $31B Apple investment is now worth $159B. Wow. With dividends, the position has compounded at 36% a year for ~5.5 years. Ark claims an extraordinarily hyperbolic expected 40% per year for the next 5 years. Start bailing kids, the ark is sinking and hope don’t float.
