Kobbie Mainoo, Elliot Anderson and Bruno Fernandes cannot play together in the same midfield. That setup gives you two No. 8s and a No. 10, but no true holding midfielder. Anderson is an outstanding player, but he naturally wants to drive forward, press high and support attacks. He is not the type to sit deep and do the dirty work that Casemiro does… shielding the back four, breaking up play and covering large spaces. Mainoo also prefers to carry the ball and progress possession, while Bruno is always looking to push forward and create chances. On paper it sounds exciting. In reality, the balance would be all wrong. Unless Manchester United sign a proper No. 6 behind them [Baleba], that midfield would be far too open. People are not ready for that conversation
