Government's Biodiversity Net Gain mandate comes into effect today, requiring a minimum 10% BNG on major sites in England. 🍃 🏘️ 🌷 Requirements will apply to small sites from 2 April 2024. #BNG #Housing

@cyclegaz @sillycyclists @SillyMotorists Another option, all three... The driver of the coach, parked right on the junction by the looks of it? Certainly a contributory factor reducing sight lines and forcing traffic round. But yes, driver and cyclist at fault.

Here is some ancient grassland on chalk. It is as irreplaceable as ancient woodland. I agree with Miles, if definitely needs better recognition in planning.

Hello @UKLabour. Can I ask you to seek amendments to the The Biodiversity Gain Requirements (Irreplaceable Habitat) Regulations 2024, such that semi-natural grasslands are included in the list of irreplaceable habitats. Many are irreplaceable in relevant timescales. @WCL_News.

@ecology_digest @andymus1 @NatureMetrics We've looked at eDNA in the context of the biodiversity metric for BNG and think it could help to inform updates. More immediately, might be worth asking the tNCEA team whether they're doing similar things nationally. Happy to forward an email if useful gov.uk/government/pub…

What discussion reveals is the need for proper monitoring schemes. We have @PoMScheme, @Rothamsted_RIS, @UKBMSLive, @GardenMoths, etc. Whilst all imperfect, we should be looking at longer-term patterns from these (not annual fluctuations) to clarify anecdotal observations (1/x)..
Graeme Lyons@graemelyons

@ecology_digest @RHarrabin @Buzz_dont_tweet @RSPBNews Not all entomologists agree, I also know plenty that are having a good season. I think things will get much worse though if we don't have rain soon.

@DaveThroup Would be interesting to see a map that marked the entire affected watercourse rather than just the point source of discharge, or tracked discharges downstream through average flow rates. Might give a better sense of the extent of the problem

Seeing how 'biodiversity' is misused by so many - eg sowing a few flowers or feeding some bees & claiming to have enhanced biodiversity - maybe we need to return to the debates of 30+ yrs ago about what biodiversity is & how we avoid simplistic takes on the complexity of nature
