ERCOT is setting an all-time demand record today at 91 GW, which is +17 GW vs the summer peak in 2021. But over the same period, maximum solar output is +27 GW. Add in the massive battery buildout, and wholesale power prices are actually lower now than they were 5 years ago.

My favorite marketing emails right now are from @crustdata They sell enrichment, but their emails are about hiring and turnover in AI labs They're a fun read, and build confidence in the product without selling it directly (@tryramp and @grid_status do very similar!)

If you work in ERCOT, you know about GridStatus. Now meet the person behind it. Josh Rhodes recently sat down with Max Kanter, founder of GridStatus, the platform many in Texas rely on to navigate ERCOT’s vast trove of public data.

Minimizing emissions is important and should be one of the goals of the energy system. And yet, we have to be honest about where wind+solar+batteries are today on a very cold day in the northeast. Everything below the red line is conventional generation. via @grid_status

You’ve seen the headlines about winter weather stressing the grid this weekend. But what does that actually look like in real time? Our market analysis team is posting live updates all weekend on our site There’s nothing like watching pros track the grid as it happens.

A managed Postgres offering by ClickHouse. Now, it's crystal clear why ClickHouse has been putting so much effort into the pg_clickhouse extension. It's going to be even more heated competition with Snowflake + Crunchy, Databricks + Neon, and TigerData. Lakehouses need transactional data, and Postgres should already be the #1 provider. Love seeing how "Postgres for analytics" is getting more attention and investment. Good for Postgres. Link: clickhouse.com/cloud/postgres

A nuclear unit came offline yesterday in MISO. What started as a normal, unplanned outage may leave MISO without 1.25 GW of nuclear generation for an extended period of time.

We're not trying to trick you, but if you factor Halloween into your decision-making, you might be in for quite a treat. Over the past 9 years, real-time load has underperformed almost all of PJM’s forecasts over the evening peak, precisely during prime trick-or-treating hours.

PJM's Capacity Auction (BRA) for 2026/2027 just cleared at the cap for the entire market. This comes on the heel of Google's recent procurement of hydropower capacity in PJM, signaling no end to Big Tech's insatiable demand for datacenter power.

New forecast from the EIA estimates that wholesale power prices are due to jump 12% this summer with natural gas as the main culprit. PJM’s hot summer with NG as the main generation source is driving most of the increase. h/t @grid_status for the chart

@elonmusk Easy to see grid-scale batteries in action in Texas. For example, yesterday, batteries we're discharging 3GW+ at the peak. The all-time record is nearly 6 GW according to the tracking at @grid_status

@grant_flagler @grid_status Prototyped a percentile based color scale. Going to take some more tweaking to get it just right. Makes pretty pictures at any time of day now even when range of prices is small.

@grid_status Can we get an option to switch to this key for other heat waves? The top zone being >$225 made the map monotone in the northeast from the early afternoon on…

🔥This week saw 72 hours of extreme temps in the Eastern US — here’s how they impacted electricity prices in 60 seconds. It was a clear reminder: summer risk isn’t going anywhere, and cooling for those new demand centers only gets more difficult as temperatures rise.
