Honoring the Life and Legacy of President Jimmy Carter Today, we honor the extraordinary life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter, a global champion for peace, justice, and equality. President Carter was unapologetic in his faith and in how he conducted himself as an elected official. He led with integrity, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving humanity. During his administration, he took pride in not having to “…launch a missile, fire a bullet, or drop a bomb on anybody…”—a testament to his dedication to peace. His friendship with the King family was deeply meaningful. In 1977, he awarded my father the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 1980, he signed legislation establishing the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site—now the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park. President Carter’s work to promote racial equality and economic justice paved the way for countless opportunities, including appointing 37 African American judges and enhancing access to federal contracts for Black businesses. His belief in justice and human dignity echoes my parents’ vision for a beloved community. If we had 10 more Jimmy Carters, maybe our world would be a different place today. I am profoundly grateful for his partnership with my mother, Coretta Scott King, and his support of her leadership in human rights. On behalf of The King Center and the King family, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Carter family. May you find comfort in knowing that his life and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in peace, President Carter. Your light and legacy will continue to guide us toward justice, peace, and equality for all. —Dr. Bernice A. King #JimmyCarter #LegacyOfPeace

We join the nation in mourning the passing of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of The United States. A Georgia native, President Carter was an ardent supporter of the Atlanta Braves. As Governor of Georgia, he was in attendance when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s home run record at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium on April 8, 1974.  Over the years, President and Mrs. Carter would often be seen cheering on the Braves in many Postseason contests. We extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family.

Jimmy Carter‘s presidency is extraordinarily underrated. But this is a good time to tell my favorite personal story. I was an advisor to the Carter Baker commission on election reform. At one of the meetings, President Carter asked if I would have lunch with him. 1/

I join the nation in mourning the loss of President Jimmy Carter. His lifelong dedication to public service, from the U.S. Navy to the White House to Habitat for Humanity to the Carter Center, was the outward manifestation of his kind, committed and honorable soul. History will look fondly on his many achievements, from the creation of the Department of Education to the Camp David Accords to his prescient focus on climate concerns. He is a President whose accomplishments will be seen for their true significance and lasting value in the years to come. Through the life that he led and the faith that he lived, Jimmy Carter consistently showed that he was the best of us. Our nation and the world were made better by him. Thank you Mr. President.

Today, our nation and our world has lost a leader who embodied dignity and decency, grace and goodness.  Paul and I join in mourning the loss of President Jimmy Carter and in giving thanks for his life, which was saintly in its devotion to public service and peace.    At the heart of President Carter’s public service was his fervent commitment to honoring the spark of divinity within every person.  He always defended that spark: whether teaching Sunday school in his beloved Maranatha Baptist Church, brokering the landmark Camp David Accords to pave the way to peace or building homes with Habitat for Humanity.  As President, his work to restore integrity to the political arena during a difficult chapter in our history was a testament to his firm faith in the sanctity of the public good, which he always placed above his own.  After leaving the White House, he carried on his service — leading perhaps the most impactful post-presidency in history.     President Carter’s love for his wife, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, is immortal.  Their beautiful bond and partnership in service were a wonder to behold.  May it be a comfort to their children, Jack, Chip, Jeff and Amy, and the entire Carter family that so many mourn their loss and are praying for them at this sad time.
