Most don't know China sailed the seas long before the British, but Chinese rulers became concerned about bringing back "bad energy".. so they grounded their fleet and the British went on to colonise half the planet.. then get wrecked by immigration..

@Guze1120cfga @BeijingDai I am no fan of Lawrence Wong neither but he's making things up with tactics used in the US Anti-China propaganda machine. He's just as bad as them.

The Prime Minister of Singapore broke down in tears during a public speech. On the surface, it seemed like he was moved by something he read, but in reality, it is because he is under tremendous pressure — and people under that kind of stress tend to get emotional very easily, which is an experience that we all have to some extent.
Where does this pressure come from? Singapore doesn't seem to have any pressing issues, does it? It of course comes from the fact that he has led Singapore to choose the United States in the U.S.-China rivalry and he knows China is fully aware of this choice. There is no turning back for Singapore. Meanwhile, the U.S. is visibly in decline, especially after Iran war, which makes him deeply anxious about Singapore’s future.
Leaders of more neutral countries — such as Malaysia or Vietnam — clearly do not bear this kind of pressure. As for this Singaporean PM, I have nothing more to say. You made your choice — now you must live with the consequences.

@WallStreetApes lol, poor African Americans are so chippy from generational racism trauma in USA.
Chinese sales assistants follow everybody around, a lot of stores operate on commission based. You're a potential $, your skin colour doesn't matter here, your $ does though.
English

A black American from Tennessee went on a trip to visit Shanghai, China
She shows in a retail store, a worker is assigned to follow her around and make sure she doesn’t steal anything
No matter where she walks, the Chinese worker follows
According to real FBI crime statistics, the likelihood of a black person stealing from a store is over 10x higher than a Chinese person stealing from a store
Stereotypes seem to exist in multiple countries

Once the 99-year lease on the New Territories expired, the island became isolated. Would Britain have stayed? Starve?
So don't act like Britain was being reasonable—it only let go because China had it by the throat."

@petruch10 @xunzic_beetle You got it all wrong, she was no empress dowager but the Emperor herself. Her husband ceded the power to her. She does have 4 useless sons, none made crown prince.
English

The Tang tried this with several, the most famous being Empress Wu who was sent to a castle in Shangyang and died there in 705. Worth reading about. She started as a 5th-rank concubine and ruthlessly worked her way to Empress by murder & political purges & then ran a brutal police state. She was already old by the time they were able to exile her, though. Less famous and more pertinent examples exist.
English

In 87 BC the dying emperor of the Han dynasty named his eight-year-old son as his successor. Then he had the boy’s mother executed.
He explained to his attendants why. The Han had repeatedly suffered when boy emperors had been controlled by their mothers. Empress Lü was the canonical case, but every subsequent reign had seen versions of the same problem. The structural defect was in the institution of the empress dowager itself, and the only reliable defense was to remove the empress dowager before she became one.
The mother was Lady Gouyi, a young consort by all accounts personally innocent of political ambition. She was sent a letter and a length of silk. She wept and refused to use it, so she was dragged to the back of the palace and killed.
The reasoning was not wrong. The Han had genuinely been damaged by overbearing dowagers, and would be damaged by them again in the next century by the Wang clan, whose eventual control of the throne would produce the only successful usurpation of the Western Han.
What is interesting is the willingness to apply structural solutions to specific human beings. The diagnosis was correct. The implementation was to kill a young woman for being correctly identified as the load-bearing element of a recurring institutional problem.
