@DieOnX69 @LundukeJournal But.. no one is forced to use these distros are they? There are plenty of non-systemd, X11 distros and with XLibre they will presumably continue. I don’t understand this attitude of being forced. I mean, if more people choose to use one or the other so be it.

@LundukeJournal Instead of goosestepping Wayland into prominence, they should let it compete on its merits. I know it's a confusing concept for the commies, but it's the best way.

With news of Flatpak 2 possibly requiring Wayland... It's worth noting that not only are half of all Linux users *not* using Wayland... but Wayland's marketshare has actually gone *down* over the last two years. In other words: Anyone making the claim that a hard dependency on Wayland is reasonable because "most Linux users use Wayland"... is not telling the truth.
The Lunduke Journal@LundukeJournal

Half of Linux Users Stick with X11, Despite Years of Wayland Being Forced Wayland has been the default for several years on the largest Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.), yet Wayland usage has actually decreased since 2024.

@metux_its @LundukeJournal I genuinely love the network features of X. I don't suppose those are likely to ever come to Wayland as they seem to be relying more on RDP type remoting which is definitely inferior (even if more secure).

@mazingjohn @LundukeJournal Yes, a lot of people really need features that Wayland doesn't have by design, eg network transparency

Is Flatpak, the Linux packaging system, getting ready to drop X11 support and implement hard requirements of Wayland and systemd? It looks that way. Flatpak 2, aka Flatpak-next, “removes all prior legacy tech, X11, init systems no one is using.” This according to Jorge Castro, Head of Ecosystems at the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (part of The Linux Foundation), who presented on the topic at the Linux Application Summit this last week. When asked for clarification on if this means the “Flatpak 2” will require systemd, the Linux Foundation representative stated, “Are you serious? Of course.”

@BowdenSalis @LundukeJournal I speak only for myself here (obviously). Wayland had some rough edges and I'm sure still does. None of the things I use daily has hit them. I find Wayland to be more performant than X in almost all cases. I haven't used VirtualBox in some years. Incus/KVM/Podman.

So much for playing with code. Bingley has commandeered my lap again and is taking random swipes at the keyboard

@FoundersGirl All of the men’s restrooms at SeaTac have free tampon dispensers now though so at least we are using that money to fix the real problems.

@AriaHiro64 @LundukeJournal Yeah the Nvidia card I have in my newest laptop is the first I’ve ever had. I always avoided them because of Linux compatibility issues. I’m not a gamer though so GPU has never been a huge priority for me.

@dmrq70 @LundukeJournal Very cool! I am attempting a switch to Linux on the desktop at work now. Lots of special Windows-only vertical apps but hoping to make it work anyway. Nowhere near 14,000 though.

@PrtkMullick @LundukeJournal Sure. I encounter some of those edge cases too. The nice thing about Linux is that we will bave edge case disteis that eschew systemd and utilize something like Xlibre. I’m fine with that. I don’t need to the “mainstream” distros. Let the market decide basically.

@mazingjohn @LundukeJournal There are edge cases for X11 usage, given that Wayland / XWayland still isn't mature enough. And this is coming from a GNOME user.

@gon_nix @LundukeJournal Is that still true? My main machine had an nvidia gpu. No issues I’ve found yet (besides sucking battery! 😂) but it’s fairly new. I’ll keep my eyes open.

@AriaHiro64 @LundukeJournal Most of my computers are 5 to 10+ years old and most seem to run Wayland just fine. It tends to perform better than X11 in fact. I have had a few problems with specific apps in the past but can’t even remember the last time I’ve run into one.

@El__Bohemio @bswagspeare One of my all time favorite movies. Probably see it 3 or 4 times per year still. Someone in the house always wants to watch it. :)

@LundukeJournal My main machine currently is running Bluefin which, I believe, was created by the above-mentioned Castro. I fully expected to hate it but I actually love it. So much less prone to breakage than Arch yet very up to date. Yes it's flatpak heavy. 🤷‍♂️

@LundukeJournal I get that a lot of us have big nostalgia for Xorg et al. I, too, miss the days where init scripts and many other things were easily understandable and didn't require arcane invocations, but.... *are* that many people really using the old stuff really??

@mazingjohn @El__Bohemio Professional software uses kernel access too. Adobe and autodesk are 2 of the worst offenders of it that makes what riot games is doing look like child's play.
