It was right about this day in April of 1993 that Bishop Wright, my former lumberjack bishop in Kanab, Utah, invited me into his office on a Sunday after the meetings were done. I'd been baptized not quite four months previous. He smiled under his bushy mustache. Asked me how I was doing. Then, without drama, said, "Well, Jared, it's about time to start preparing for a mission." I chuckled, then realized he wasn't kidding. He spoke carefully, following inspiration, allaying all my fears and promising me the Lord wanted me out in the field to preach the Good Word. I cannot adequately express my gratitude for that bold, loving, inspired bishop. Starting a mission to humble, beautiful Brasilia, Brazil a year later was the best possible thing I could do with my life. God bless bold, loving, inspired bishops. Never hold back on delivering the Lord's challenges and promises.

@dustinharding You know what would be really neat, if the bishops would also admit they struggle with sin. Not the “I had a bad thought today” type sin but the real sins we all know every person has. Unfortunately the culture and the way people get “called” as bishop isn’t conducive to that 🤷‍♂️

How do you overcome pornography or any other addiction? As a bishop, I discovered that this is the only sure method.

@STLChrisH I’m familiar with a lot of these. Many were raging dumpster fires before they ever sold to PE. Buy a raging dumpster fire for a stupid multiple and then be surprised when it gets worse?

Hey parents: Don't lie to your kids about Santa. Tell them from day 1 that Santa represents the spirit of Christmas, the spirit of giving - not that he's a literal dude delivering presents. But ask them not to ruin it for other kids. It's one of my biggest parenting regrets. Just trust me. Keep Christ at the forefront of the Christmas experience, and Santa as just a cool story and tradition for many.

When Section 119 was revealed the saints practiced the law according to their time and they paid on “interest.” Think of a family with no real cash income but agricultural increase that could be paid in kind. They wouldn’t continue to pay 1/10th of their livestock year after year until they had nothing left. So, they paid on their increase. It wasn’t until 1963 that the church clarified that “increase” in our time is meant to be income. I have ward members each year that pay their tithes in kind, directly to the church. Today though, that’s not livestock, but usually actual shares of stock.

Have you ever heard of paying your tithing on your income AFTER necessary living expenses… so, on your “interest,” meaning surplus or profit? Can this be a legitimate interpretation or is it dishonest? I will say that the church has always refused to define what is meant by “income” or give a precise formula for calculating tithing.
