@home3d Currently only directional lights are supported - the most important light type for GI along with sky light imo. But when the sun hits, it can look pretty vibey, though pretty low fidelity x.com/i/status/20382…

@QuadArt_3D Thanks to the custom geometry volume implementation, it's pretty good for interiors at times. But generally speaking, light leaking is unavoidable with this algo :)
English

My "Light Propagation Volume" plugin for #UE5 is now featuring Cascades system! It adds much longer light bounce distances, than what could be previously seen in the UE4's LPV implementation.
Still some work to do, performance-wise as well :) But it's shaping up very nicely.

@karateclub90000 @__NopiA Yeah, I was going to say the same and decided to check the comments. Gastrocnemius muscle is attached to the Calcaneal (Achilles) tendon and the feet swivel on the joint, so when the muscle contracted the toes go down.

@OneEyedJackG @Dreamboum Light of Motiram was a product that Tenscent asked permission to make from Sony, and after declined still released it. They knew they infringed the rights.

@Dreamboum Sony sued Tencent for Light of Motiram, so will this studio get sued by Sandfall Interactive?

@IamKyros69 I have the same question as many others, why a game uses neural net? If that was true the response times were measured in seconds, not in milliseconds.
English

@ericjeker Atm AI can't generate meaningful UE code. You add a plugin, make some changes, and AI is completely lost. Probably cause it can't maintain the logic of whole engine that updates every few months plus custom code, plus blueprints.
English

@DylserX Looks interesting, but... 1. It's super annoying, and every player probably would like to remove it as soon as possible (game mechanic?). 2. It's "incorrect", our eyes have focal distance and when looked at something far away all in front becomes blurry. Also we have two eyes.

@DevinDtv @BaumE__ @Anglodust Wait. Is that "many more effects on screen" in your video? Cause I could not see that part. Can you post just the screenshots if it's not hard.
English

@BaumE__ @Anglodust Why are you talking about how big the "decrease" is? It doesn't matter what FPS I started at.
I get 250 FPS. AKA 4ms frametime. During soj e.
But I get 400 FPS. AKA 2.5ms frametime. During a full ult exchange (many more effects on screen).
Do you get it?
English

@DevinDtv @CptSpaceCat That post demonstrating your lack of understanding of performance. There are such things as "base cost", "overhead cost" etc. You add additional visuals and expect them to run at no cost? Alpha blending operations are very expensive.
English

@CptSpaceCat What I do or don't do to my settings has no relevance. The post is demonstrating instances of poor optimization, which affect every single player of the game.
English

@NathanGDQuest Most "technical" media already advocating for measurement that is different from FPS. Cause in gamedev we already got used to frame time (in milliseconds), and "fake frames" are just making situation worse.
English

This clips means to show that an effect in the game is poorly optimized.
FPS goes from 600 to 300! So this attacks makes the game 2x slower?
No, not at all. Let me explain.
(Note: maybe there are performance issues in the game, just this clip does not really show that)
Here are some numbers:
- At 600 FPS it means the entire frame is processed and rendered in 1.6 milliseconds
- When it drops to 300 FPS it means everything happens in 3.2ms. We can assume the multi-layered full screen effect is costing 1.6 milliseconds per frame in this specific scenario.
It's not making the game really 2x slower, it just has this peak cost of 1.6ms in drawing time, on this machine, with this resolution, and with these graphic settings.
If you want to ensure the game runs at 120 FPS, your budget per frame is 8.3 milliseconds. As long as you've not depleted this budget, you're good. If you're aiming for the game to run at a steady 60 FPS the budget is double that, 16.67 milliseconds.
Importantly, note that this kind of effect only affects the drawing part of the game and wouldn't affect the logic running on the CPU at all.
This means that you could have tens of thousands of physics calculations happening at the same time in parallel or lots of bots or enemies moving around and shooting and you might not see any change to the frame rate.
This only eats the drawing time budget.
Now the point really is just that this clip and the numbers do not tell that the game is going to run slowly or that this effect is too heavy for the game to run at a steady 60 or even 120 FPS.
Again, maybe there are performance issues with the game, just these high FPS numbers that drop a lot are misleading.
That's why profilers measure processing time in milliseconds.
DevinDTV@DevinDtv
can we take optimization seriously again?
