I don't get to say this often, but today I am officially going full time with @cardinalappio as their first employee and first designer to lead their design efforts and help them shape the world of PM! Let me explain my crazy reasoning to jump into startup world (again) and why you should too.
After being laid off, I wanted to find a company I can really exercise my knowledge and leverage my skills to produce something not only beautiful, but useful. I wanted to challenge myself in ways I had not in a long time—help a team go from 0 -> 1 and then 1 -> N. In other words, I want to stay for an entire journey building a company from the ground up and not just act as a systems plumber to somebody else' problem as so many designers' roles inevitably evolve to.
I've had the pleasure to lead several product teams, initiatives responsible for tens of billions of dollars, and grow design systems. I wanted to see if i could do all that again and more in a different context—prove to myself it wasn't luck, but skill. Oh and getting a bit of equity too would have been a really exciting accomplishment!
During my time, I revisited contract work. I never liked this method of working, and don't shame others who do. It's just not my cup of tea. But it led me to collaborating with @nadavwiz and @slmosl on their YC-backed startup called Cardinal!
This changed everything for me.
No longer was the problem being solved, the equity, or the thrill of a startup life the top most important priority of consideration—it was the chance to work alongside and be mentored by great people. Wiz and Mor are those people.
Sitting down with them, jamming at coffee shops on new concepts, and actually debating viewpoints of disagreement without judgement while ending those conversations with "I really enjoyed that chat!" gives me a feeling of welcomed creativity to explore, learn, and grow in ways I couldn't have possibly done so anywhere else.
When could I have come in on ground 0 of a startup, as first employee, defining the product experience to such an incredibly difficult problem, and have creative license to explore any means of solving that idea?!
It was inevitable I'd continue working with Wiz and Mor. They have something really special—not an idea, but a tenacity, a conviction of forcing luck where they want it. That draws me more and more to collaborating with them.
I decided it was time to take a leap of faith, with the support of my girlfriend, to join a startup where I can learn new skills and help build a company.
When you come across a to-good-to-be-true opportunity, you take it.
I, like most others, like to play my cards well. I take chances where I have a strong sense of success is in my corner, and I focus intensely. I've learned life is too short to be playing somebody else's game, clocking in and clocking out of a meaningless expenditure of effort. So I had to decide if this opportunity was right for me.
And when you get to come across a similar opportunity, you have to consider many things. But one thing that I now use as a north star for making decisions: in 20, 30, 50 years, will I regret passing on that opportunity? If it's yes, then do it and suffer the consequences of failure.
Likely the worst case is I make a salary and the startup collapses. At that point it would be onto the next idea. It's a very minimal repercussion for a failed startup.
However, the upside could be wild. Grow a team, culture, and product, learn the skills to manage lead and execute on ideas quickly without bureaucratic oversight, explore ideas and test theories, learn from incredible people, participate in a portion of equity, enjoy a flexible schedule matched with high expectations... I mean the upside just seems like a dream.
With all that said, I'm now on a mission to focus my time each day to making Cardinal succeed. I hope to speak more about my experiences soon.
Special thanks to @nadavwiz and @slmosl for taking a chance on me, and being duped into hiring me ;) Hope to make y'all proud! Thank you to my incredible and supportive girlfriend, Brittany, who's always in my corner and makes me smile every day when we wake up and every night when we go to sleep. Thank you to my design mentor and best friend, Eli, who connected me with Cardinal and is always wiling to give advice. And of course all my previous co-workers, friends, and family, for their infinite amount of love and support through every step of my journey.
Nuff of this, I have to get back to work! ✌️

@MESSINATOKOLY @TechCrunch @RebeccaBellan The tech I’m referring to is the manufacturing process. The additive and subtractive equipment they used is impressive to watch. There is no traditional process that can compete with its efficiency and adaptability. There is nothing to be “eager” about - It’s already here.

@mcc4b3 @TechCrunch @RebeccaBellan I understand you are eager about new tech but at the same time try and understand that some just wont work as efficiently as existing tech. its the same with the hyperloops....

@federicovillaw Incredible installation. The journey from waving to the crowd to the frantic final moments of the bot fighting to survive. I honestly had to step away from my desk for a bit when I came across this last year.

Everything, including us is fleeting, and within it lies the poetry of ambition, joy, understanding, compromise, and death.
What are we all doing with the time we have left? Let's not forget any path can always be changed.
