It’s almost like the @NBA has lost sight of its future - kids like mine who love basketball. For Xmas, surprised boys with @dallasmavs vs @memgrizz tix. They love @JaMorant and couldn’t wait to watch Cooper Flagg. Bought tix in December, and made the drive from Hou for a father/sons trip today.
We’re going to the game in an hour to watch backups. My oldest son (12) just told me he wishes we would have stayed home and played golf tmrw morning.
I get injuries, and it’s just bad luck. I also get tanking for the future. But dang, my boys are legitimately bummed, so now I am, too. We’ll find a way to have fun because we’re together. But the NBA is about stars, except when they aren’t on the court. @mcuban

I mean Tiger in ‘19 - maybe. But this is next level. Can’t believe it’s really him. I had my 9 yr old up late watching, trying to explain who @AnthonyKim_Golf was and what an amazing story this is. So glad I got to see it.

As a journalist & media owner for 25+ years, I got a pretty good look at the erosion of media trust. Not sure I can find a better example of why it has happened than this article from @ESPN & @RobDawsonESPN on @ManUtd co-owner Jim Ratcliffe’s immigration comments: espn.com/soccer/story/_…
No honest person can read this and say it’s journalism (where the creed was once that we tell as many sides of the story and let the reader decide). It's a one-sided pile-on with quotes from Starmer, Muslim Supporters Club, Supporters Trust, & Kick It Out all bashing him as "offensive" & "disgraceful." Seriously, read it and tell me I'm wrong.
Zero effort to explore the other side: No data on UK's rising immigration numbers, economic strains, or unchecked migration concerns. No outreach to Ratcliffe or a spokesperson for context.
This isn't reporting. It's activism disguised as news, and it’s designed to fuel anger instead of dialogue. Even one paragraph on (legitimate) worries would have sufficed. It’s why people like @mtaibbi @bariweiss @ClayTravis keep sounding the alarm on what seems like media bias. It's something @KonstantinKisin talks about a lot in the UK.
Not that “journalists” want to do better, but news stories are supposed to be written FOR the reader; not TO them.

@NUCLRGOLF @TrackingKoepka The putter won't fix that loop he's got in that stroke. He takes it back inside and then almost comes over the top. Watch that first putt he pulls.

Interesting the @wapo cutbacks happen and the @PittsburghPG owners announce they’ve lost $350 million and can’t do it anymore. A lot of (on point) love for good journalists and news deserts, but the model is broken and the hope that public outrage and moral social media posts can fix it just isn’t the case.
No matter how philanthropic someone might be, there has to be a path forward. Bezos hasn’t found it and that guy turned a bookstore into a conglomerate.

I remember when @BKoepka left @PGATOUR and they said “no big deal.” And then he comes back to PGA and he’s featured group, constant coverage, interviewed by Jim & Amanda and given the royal treatment. So not a big deal leaving but biggest story out of Rose coming back? Checks out. @flushingitgolf @chambleebrandel @Daniel_Rapaport

@ClubProGuy Any good tales from your Tour days of an opponent putting up this much of a fight in a playoff?

English

@ClayTravis Well, at least he listens to his head coach on something.

@EnduranceAgency @Mike_kim714 @ringer @BillSimmons @LegsESPN Ok, don’t take my word for it (it’s not a personal theory that will cost me sleep). Shaq talked about it a lot. So did Ray Allen:

English

@mcelvy @Mike_kim714 @ringer @BillSimmons @LegsESPN You must be kidding. I have shot with all those balls and find it much easier to shoot. Just because it feels weird to you to shoot into a regulation hoop with a tennis ball from time to time, that doesn't mean it is harder if you did that for decades in practice
English

“I am marveling at his ability to put up those kind of numbers when he’s got that level of physical limitation.”
@BillSimmons and @LegsESPN are in disbelief over Joel Embiid’s performance this season.
English

@EnduranceAgency @Mike_kim714 @ringer @BillSimmons @LegsESPN The larger your hands, the harder it is to shoot a basketball. Fun experiment: Get a golf ball, baseball, softball and then basketball. Shoot free throws with each of them and determine which was the hardest/easiest.
English

@mcelvy @Mike_kim714 @ringer @BillSimmons @LegsESPN Not sure if I get the point. If my head is much closer to the target (hoop) and wing span also helps with the leverage, I will have an advantage.
English

@Mike_kim714 @ringer @BillSimmons @LegsESPN Try shooting a softball and then shooting a basketball. Which one is easier? It’s why I marvel at young players like Wemby who make 3s and FTs.
English

@ringer @BillSimmons @LegsESPN Biomechanically, there is no reason big men have less shooting touch than a smaller guy. They just didn’t grow up training that skill because they didn’t need to.

@PeterBurnsESPN All the replies that European players don't have the same options, so that makes it different... European players come to the US and play for NCAA teams all the time before they play pro. (Straight from the horse's mouth.)

Good list of players who’ve played pro ball now playing in SEC.
Once the NCAA allowed any type of professional player back into the college game, why does it matter the zip code of where their pay check came from?

Chales Bediako mini FAQ
1. He's TAKING AWAY AN OPPORTUNITY FROM A HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER WHO COULD GET A SCHOLARSHIP.
No. Even if he plays the rest of this season, he will not be on the roster beyond this season.
2. Then he's taking away opportunity from THIS YEAR'S roster. They'll get mad and transfer!
Aiden Sherrell is our starting 5. One of his backups has played 11 minutes (total) and is out with a heart issue. Another one of his backups has played 10 games and has been out with a foot issue. His other backup averages fewer than 10 minutes per game. Two other Bama players have been out as well. So no, not really. The one healthy backup, Noah Williamson, barely plays anyway and has no remaining eligibility.
3. But he's not even enrolled as a student!
Actually he is. Recently re-enrolled. Working toward finishing his degree.
4. Baylor's James Nnaji started this. But that's TOTALLY different.
Yes. Nnaji actually got SELECTED in the NBA draft. Bediako didn't. (Yes, Bediako signed two-way and Exhibit 10 NBA contracts. He also never played in an NBA game. The Euro League is considered higher quality than the G League. Several teams are playing former European pros.)
5. The NCAA should just ban Bama from the NCAA Tournament ... or not count any game in which Bediako plays!
The court ruling expressly prohibits that. If the NCAA ignores it, it will be in contempt of court and facing restitution and a huge legal issue.
6. Is Bediako for sure back for good?
No. Bama plans to play him Saturday assuming all goes well in practice this week. The temporary injunction lasts until a hearing on Jan. 27. We'll see after that.
7. But this is just ridiculous and should not happen!
You're right. Bama fans pretty much agree. Even Nate Oats agrees. But Nick Saban once said about new rules favoring the offense: "is this really what we want football to be?" -- then went on to exploit those rules better than anyone.
Bama did not decide "this is a good idea." But we have as much right to operate within this landscape as your team does.
8. Well, how does Bediako fit from a basketball standpoint?
In 2022-23, Nate Oats and Bama (gasp!) put a KenPom top 5 defense on the court. Yes, it included current NBA players Brandon Miller (6-7) and Noah Clowney (6-10) hounding the perimeter with current Arizona guard Jaden Bradley.
But Bama played a ton of drop coverage with Bediako and did not worry about blow-bys with Bediako protecting the rim. Finished third in the country (!) in Evan Miya's individual defensive metric that year. In a year with Zach Edey, Donovan Clingan, Johni Broome, Colin Castleton, Derrick Lively II, Kyle Filipowski and others.
He was a decent/adequate rebounder but a limited junk player on offense (mostly putbacks). Also couldn't play more than 15-20 min. a game with the Nate Oats tempo.
He figures to give Bama a mind-blowing upgrade at the backup 5. Immediate help protecting the rim and rebounding. Assuming he assimilates fast, maybe 5-15 minutes a game.
Would not expect a lot of two-man lineups with Sherrell and Bediako. But he fits Bama's exact position of need (backup 5) and exact skillset of need (rim protection, rebounding).
If this works, at best, it elevates Bama one or two seed lines.
If Latrell Wrightsell gets back to himself AND Bediako is an approximation of his most recent season at Bama, this is MAYBE a fringe national title contender.
Trelly ruptured his Achilles last season and has not been able to get healthy. He shot over 40% from 3 the last two seasons and is the best perimeter defender on this team per Nate Oats (just 10 games, 26.9% from 3 this season, currently out).
Bama's offense has been Top 5 all season. The defense has been anywhere from the mid-30s to nearly 80th. Generally you need a top 30 defense to win a title. Bediako and Trelly BOTH at their best could deliver that, but that's not very likely.
