Jim Ratcliffe – the INEOS boss and Man United co‑owner – has lit a firestorm this week with his comments about the UK and immigration. In a TV interview he said the UK has been “colonised by immigrants”, that they are “draining resources from the state”, and that “you can’t have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in”. He also claimed the population has jumped from 58 million in 2020 to 70 million now, which fact‑checkers have since said is way off. I’m not using this post to argue for or against what he said, just to flag what was actually said and the reaction. The Prime Minister and others have called the comments “offensive and wrong” and asked him to apologise, and he’s since said he’s sorry that his “choice of language” offended people. So here’s my question for you… When someone in sport with a massive platform says stuff like this: •Is it good they’re speaking honestly about politics, even if it’s messy? •Or should people in sport – owners, riders, managers, ex‑pros – stay in their lane and keep out of political debates?
