As an archaeologist of ancient Greece, I finally saw the Odyssey yesterday
All I can say is "Fucking WOW"
I could nitpick for hours about the armor and architecture. I could praise with detailed comparanda the jewelry and pottery and a range of interior decoration. I could find a thousand deviations from the original epic poem and another thousand reasons it stayed true to Homer's story. I could give zero shits about the skin color of the cast
But talk about cinematic storytelling! The perfect musical score (inspired by Albanian polyphony and folk music), the epic battles and elaborately filmed monsters, and all the super well-done at-sea moments. The dialog was sometimes heavy handed (even cheesy) but that suits for an epic myth in any era
But overall. It was just a lot of fun to watch. The Cyclops was scary, Calypso's lotus was tempting, and the final battle was fucking intense. Good chance we go and see it a second time. Definitely go IMAX (we just went to a normal IMAX, not 70mm) for the larger screen and deeper sound
Plus, Circe and the pigs was the best fairy tale-esque scene I've ever seen. Absolutely phenomenal

did u guys know orca whales are matriarchal and remain with their mothers their entire lives. they also have entire parts of their huge brains other animals (including humans) don’t have. one such structure is for emotional processing. these are the most beautiful creatures

One thing I loved about the third act of The Odyssey was the reveal that the “people of the sea” everyone feared and kept talking about were actually Odysseus and his crew all along.
They’d been going from island to island, causing chaos and breaking Zeus’s laws the entire time. 😭
