i think a lot about that guy in the early 1900s who went to bosnia to the last illiterate communities in europe and found out they were still reciting homer epic-length poems to each other from memory. but when they became literate they lost the ability to remember the poems

This has never made sense to me. The sea looks like wine all the time! At sunrise and sunset, when looking straight into it on a gloomy day, or even just at night? “Wine dark” is a perfectly legible metaphor for me, as someone who knows what water looks like.

i think its funny people claimed the greeks couldnt see blue and thats why they described the sea as "wine dark" when the much more obvious explanation is that wine used to be blue back then
