There is an attempt to rebrand Final Fantasy XVI like it's some misunderstood masterpiece. It's not. Here's why: 1) Its combat is insulting to OG FF fans: -It sends the message: "You don't matter anymore. We want a different audience. We still want your money though, so we called it Final Fantasy" 2) Its story is a bloated mess: -You could cut the entire the Desert segment, and nothing of value would be lost -There is a Main Quest where Clive goes to the shops to buy garlic. I am not making this up -It plays like an MMO, full of low-stakes quests to pad out Subscription Time. This makes no sense, because you can only buy the game once 3) It wastes its best character 1/3rd into the story: -No one cares that this was for "Clive's development". All it did was the develop the story into a more boring one -To add insult to injury, the game then slaps you with "5 Years Later..." 4) Its idea of "mature writing" is to drop the F bomb every 30 seconds: -Swearing is fine when a script is well-written. But FF16 tries too hard to prove that Final Fantasy can be "badass". As a result, it reads like teen fan fiction It's not a "misunderstood masterpiece" - it's just not that good. It has some strong spectacle (Titan & Bahamut boss fights), but these moments are drowned in an ocean of boring scenes. There's a reason it only sold 22,000 copies on Xbox in its first week. There's a reason it has not 1, but 2 DLCs - and nobody knows or cares At the end of the day, the only crowd it appeals to are the people who will buy literally anything with the "Final Fantasy" name on it It will not stand the test of time. It already hasn't #FF16 #FinalFantasy #FFXVI

I love Expedition 33, it's fantastic, but it didn't revive the genre or anything like that. Metaphor ReFantazio JUST came out last year and rated higher (94) + nominated for GOTY, it actually won IGN, GameSpot's overall GOTY. There are many other incredible recent turn based RPGs.

@shady_only Yeah this is a bad take. Expedition 33 is probably my number 2 of all time. I hadn’t played a game that made me feel that way since literally 1999 when legend of dragoon was out on ps1. It’s just a difference of there are gamers and then there are online only gamers.

@CountRadical @ChibiReviews Japanese teens are the original target audience, which is also the reason majority of stories focus around teenage characters, romance, slife of life, shounen, etc, they aren’t really expecting a 30 to 40 year old to be reading a romance full of teenagers, 18 either.

Hot Take: I believe the reason so many hate "2020 Anime Fans" is because they don't want to integrate with the community. They only seek to forcefully change it You never saw as much drama about fictional character ages 6 years ago. People assume its just Twitter, but you see people upset about fictional content within anime on all platforms I think TikTok is a big reason for this too, cause people watch shows through clips with edits. So they join a community with no idea of what content is within it
