For those who criticise the UN, and insult those who answer the call. This is why we did it, and continue to do it, regardless of the provocation or dangers.

@IlminsterSteve @pinstripedline Best model I've seen is joint CivMilstaff cells. The CS side of the house ensures consistency and maintenance of corporate knowledge, the Mil side allows for rotation from frontline units whilst ensuring staff cells have relatively contemporaries input from frontline perspective

@pinstripedline Not contentious at all, expensive service personnel are being misused in posts that could be better filled by CS and vice versa, and honest appraisal of each post would bring benefits to both, but too often it's how it's always been done rules the decisions

@AndrewRawson11 @Clint_Davey1 On top of those Irish troops with the Ancacs, there the whole 10th (Irish) Division of the British army was deployed, losing 8,000 men in 2 months, a further 3 Irish regiments were in other British divisions.

Unless you're Australian, New Zealander or Turkish you may not know or care much about the Gallipoli campaign. But it was a hugely significant event. -The only large-scale amphibious assault in WW1. D-Day planners had Gallipoli at the back of their minds as an example of what can go wrong with these operations. -First time Australia and New Zealand fought with their own units at divisional level. Forged our identity as nations, and as distinct from Britain. It also gave the Anzacs invaluable combat experience before they were transferred to the Western Front, where they also served with distinction. -Saw the rise of Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) who later led Turkey amidst the collapse of the 700 year-old Ottoman Empire. Gallipoli is just as important for Turks as it is for Aussies and New Zealanders. -Britain's show of force in the Eastern Mediterranean helped convince Italy to join the Allies later in 1915. -Nearly ruined the career of Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty and the architect of the whole campaign. He spent years trying to rehabilitate his image and make people forget Gallipoli. -Fought very close to the historical site of Troy, which had been found about 45 years earlier. The Anzacs felt they were involved in something epic and tragic, just like the Trojan War. -A 9-month trench warfare campaign fought in a tiny 2km by 1km rectangle of cliffs and coastline. Some of the most horrific and difficult close-range fighting in modern warfare.

@FoundationDietz Will you be doing another run of LC:Baltic, as the site kept refusing my transaction prior to payments being paused for you to get shipping done?

How after all these years is it still so difficult to use a One For All gift card to buy something online? Please just give people cash/card/debit/bank transfer and put an end to this bloody stupid cards that are nothing but a hassle for the person using them.

But if it is LCT 2135 (and I suspect it probably is), then it does mean that we can no longer claim that LCT 7074 is D-Day’s last surviving LCT! @NickHewitt4, @NatMuseumRN, @DDayStory

Last night I gave a talk about the archaeology and historical research I conducted during the restoration of LCT 7074. It meant revisiting a lot of my earlier work and updating some of it 4 years later. And I’ve found something rather exciting!

@TimHirst5 @NavyLookout HMNZS Manawanui is only about 20% of the weight of the MV Baltic Ace, so hopefully will mean she can be re-floated. The issue maybe the internal damage to equipment from flood and fire impacted any potential return to service

@NavyLookout I wonder if it can be patched and re floated or if it’ll need to be cut into sections which can be lifted. An example of the second method is the MV Baltic Ace which whent down in 35m outside Rotterdam. youtube.com/watch?v=CuT6c3…

View of the 🇳🇿HMNZS Manawanui wreck site. RNZN and 🇼🇸Samoan divers continue to assess the ship. A light oil slick has been seen. A leak from an engine room vent is the source which will be plugged. A Navy team has been established to react to any contamination of local beaches and to remove debris that has started to come ashore.

The Irish army stared down the turrets of Israeli tanks for 7 long days. They refused to abandon their posts. They refused to abandon the villagers. They refused to abandon Lebanon. They faced down the most brutal army in the world. Fearlessly. They deserve a Nobel Peace Prize

@KBrenna41443076 @theirishfor Would that be the same Scoil Neasain that engaged in a protracted legal battle with a local sports club to claim squatters rights over a piece of land that the club had developed with floodlights, etc, after the -re development from waste land was complete?

The notion that Gaelscoileanna are elitist hinges on articles by middle class journalists who had only heard of the two famous ones on the Stillorgan Road. And they were angry that those kids were getting private school Leaving results for free; they didn't care about exclusion!

Drumcondra AFC Drumcondra were one of the big clubs I'm the League of Ireland back in the 1950s and 60s with a huge rivalry with Shamrock Rovers. The club were the first to many things, including the first League of Ireland club to win a European tie on aggragate, the first club to have floodlights installed (Tolka Park) and the first club to field a black player in the League of Ireland, Ray Keogh.

I’m not interested in the politics of the incident, but I’m faintly amused by the outcry as if this sort of protest-vandalism has never happened at Stonehenge before. It has, more often than you might think.

This is not an attempt to justify what happened at Stonehenge today, or even to change anyone’s mind about it. I’d simply like to add some context that I feel has been missing from some reports, statements and tweets.
