@mdsawyermd @NickFromCyprus @pickover Adding 1/2 to a number makes it greater. Taking half of a positive number makes is smaller. Those with a little number sense knew that the number had to be negative right away.

@NickFromCyprus @pickover Right, how could the problem be visualized, intuited? That's what fascinates me about people with great mathematical minds/insights...how do they see/know what they do, even before they can express it logically or in an equation?

Mathematics. (Although some of you will say this is too "easy," what percentage of people on planet Earth could answer such a strange question?)

@edsouthall Having a very good understanding of what you are teaching, an understanding that goes well beyond the level at which you are teaching, is necessary, but, of course, not sufficient. A degree doesn’t have as much to do with that understanding as one might suspect.

@PeteButtigieg The answer to so many of our transportation challenges is redesigning our cities in a way where walking, biking, and taking transit are more convenient and less expensive than driving. We know how to do it. Time to make it happen.

This is a moment of tremendous opportunity—to create jobs, meet the climate challenge, and enhance equity for all. I'm honored that the President-elect has asked me to serve our nation as Secretary of Transportation.

@MissBoucher94 I usually say, “If you don’t learn it, then you’re right, you won’t use it. If you do learn it, then maybe you will. Keep your options open.”

Out of interest, what do fellow maths teachers say when kids ask "why are we learning this, will I ever use it in life" etc.? #mathschat #teammaths

Presh Talwalkar from MindYourDecisions
Can anyone solve this? I have a numerical answer using trigonometry. I did find a geometry "proof" online but it was faulty. Many people are requesting this problem, so I would like to make a video. Help is much appreciated, thanks!
