The successful recovery of Police Officer Ran Gvili’s body in Gaza closes one of the darkest chapters of the Middle East conflict. For the first time since 2014 there are no Israeli hostages held in Gaza. All 20 live hostages and all 28 deceased hostages in Gaza have now been returned home. Under @realDonaldTrump leadership, @SEPeaceMissions and I worked closely with @CIA, @Netanyahu and his team, @IDF, Egypt’s GIS, Turkey, Qatar, and many cooperative Gazans to make possible this unthinkable outcome. Coordination and trust were built between individuals and organizations where none previously existed. This produced tangible results. Helping the people of Gaza start a new chapter free from the tyranny of Hamas is a critical mission to prevent future death and destruction for Israelis and Palestinians. This will also eliminate a flashpoint manipulated by disingenuous actors to mobilized antisemitism and other forms of division and hatred. We are trying new approaches, hoping to achieve new outcomes. This is an end, but also a new beginning.

With the passing of convicted Soviet spy and former CIA officer Aldrich Ames, we remember Sandy Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille, and the team who upheld the Agency's values by uncovering his betrayal. Even in dark moments, integrity, courage, and justice prevail.

While the Intelligence Community does not have anything comparable to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, former officers should remember the oath and commitment they made while serving at CIA, and conduct themselves accordingly— even long after they leave. Senator Slotkin’s assertion that CIA officers are receiving illegal orders and should therefore refuse to follow them is now, by her own admission, without basis and recklessly false. Unfortunately, she has now joined the ranks of disgraced former intelligence officers — including the ‘51 spies who lied’ — who’ve abused their IC credentials to advance a malicious and disingenuous political agenda.
