@RandyAdjepong A simple proposal would be "Junior Researcher" instead of "Phd student". But other options are OK, as long as the job title fairly reflects the nature of the job.

@MathewsonPhD @CinziaYates @timeshighered I agree that changing the name alone will not solve the deep underlying issues. Yet, changing names represents a moment of discontinuity and will better reflect the nature of the job, hopefully spurring people to act. And I would hardly call the title "Researcher" a neologism.

@CinziaYates @timeshighered @michnard_ And as happens with most neologisms, they might make the user feel better for a while but eventually the new word will take on the same stigma as the old. Attitudes are driven by status. If status doesn't change, the stigma will return.

@CinziaYates @timeshighered And yet many people do not know. And people who know are led astray by current titles. The titles "student" and "postdoc" obscure the nature of the job and carry a lot of historical baggage that is time to drop.
