@signulll @michaelmiraflor fwiw i use it daily, and its genuinely useful to mediate some of the smaller tedious stuff and incredibly useful for research, but its incredibly wrong in not so obvious, but definitely liability inducing ways

Now I find if I send texts I write to ChatGPT for comment, it does the exact opposite of goading towards AI psychosis: it's goading towards banality. The common critique is "you are mixing registers", "do not mix textual styles" etc. Here's part of an output it just gave me: "it is intelligent, candid, and high-agency, but rhetorically unstable. It begins in one mode, which is scholarly clarification and substantive agreement, then shifts into industry polemic, then into benchmark prospectus, then into institutional mission statement. Each of those modes is defensible on its own. In one email, they compete." Yes they compete--of course they compete. Human discourse is messy, necessarily so. But it wants me to write specifically within one highly constrained register: if you want to be an academic, write academically, if you want to be a business person, write businesslike, if you want to be a friend, write like a friend. And in many cases this is certainly true. When I write publications for academic journals or white papers or whatever, of course there is a generic expectation that I must adhere to. And I can--I am very good at it, hence I've made a (quite good) living as a writer for 15 years. But as a good writer I also know the limitations of form: if you stick to just one register and one constrained language game, you cannot bring in knowledge from other language games and, most crucially, YOU CANNOT CREATE A NEW GAME. The LLMs now with their post training do not want us to do this. They are becoming tools of linguistic conformity. My prediction is that this will not be criticized by the tech press. They WANT this--they want us to be in our little boxes and do what is appropriate for it. They'll focus their ire on other issues, like IP or "TERK ER JERBS" or whatever bullshit the editors at Ass Technica et all decide on as the swill of the day for the clickbait hungry piggies. And this is also a testament to the alpha one gets on Twitter and why I am so active here: it is HERE that I can freely mix registers and make my point most effectively. Sure, I can critique Tyler Cowen's atrocious anti-human motivated reasoning via a calm analysis of the lack of logic in his bad economic research. But the point lands when you call him a doodoo head.
