A lot of you asked how to actually evaluate a stock so let me show you what I look at before I commit a single naira. Save this. 1. Revenue trend: Is revenue growing for at least 3 consecutive years. One good year could be luck. Three years is a pattern. 2. Profit after tax: A company can make N80 billion in revenue and still lose money. Go straight to the bottom line. Real profit after all expenses, debt, and tax. 3. Cash flow: A company can fake profit through accounting. It cannot fake cash. Check operating cash flow. If profit says N20 billion but cash flow is negative, that profit exists on paper only. 3. Cash flow: This is the one most beginners skip. A company can report profit on paper through accounting tricks but cash flow does not lie. I check operating cash flow. If profit says N20 billion but operating cash flow is negative, that profit is on paper only. 4. Debt to equity: Total debt divided by total shareholders equity. Under 1 is healthy. Above 2 is dangerous. For banks this works differently because leverage is their business model so I focus on capital adequacy ratio instead. The CBN requires a minimum of 10% for national and regional banks and 15% for international banks. 5. Return on equity: Net profit divided by shareholders equity times 100. Above 15% is solid. Above 20% is excellent. Below 10% means management is not working hard enough with your money. Two companies can have the same profit but completely different ROE. 6. Dividends: Has the company paid consistently for at least 5 years. Is the amount growing or shrinking. I also check payout ratio which is dividends divided by earnings. Between 30% and 60% is healthy. Above 80% means the company may not be reinvesting enough to grow. 7. Business clarity: If I cannot explain how the company makes money in one sentence I move on. Cement for a building nation. Banking for 200 million people. Telecoms for a country addicted to data. I let complexity be someone else’s problem. 8. Insider ownership: Do directors own significant shares. Insiders who own shares make decisions like owners not employees. Heavy insider buying is one of the most reliable bullish signals in the market. 9. Valuation: P/E ratio is share price divided by earnings per share. Nigerian banks are at 2 to 4 right now. The S&P 500 is currently trading at a P/E above 26. You are getting some of the most profitable banks in West Africa at roughly one tenth of what American investors pay for their stocks. Then I check price to book which is share price divided by book value per share. Some Nigerian banks are at 0.3 to 0.5. That means you are paying 30 to 50 kobo for every N1 of net assets. Where to check all of this for free. Nairametrics.com for earnings and stock analysis. Proshare.com for company financials and research. Stocksng.com for ratios and valuation. NGX website ngxgroup.com for annual reports and dividends.
Toby@TomolaGroup

I want to save beginners from a trap I fell into. Buying a stock just because the price looks cheap. A stock trading at N2 per share is not automatically a better deal than one trading at N200 per share. Price means nothing without context. A N2 stock from a company that is losing money and drowning in debt could drop to N0.50. A N200 stock from a company that earns N50 per share and grows 25% yearly is actually cheaper in terms of value. Price is what you see on the screen. Value is what the business is actually worth. They are not the same thing. A N2 stock can be expensive. A N200 stock can be cheap. It depends entirely on the business behind it. The next time someone tells you to buy a stock because it is only N3, ask them if the company is making profit. Watch their face. Have you ever bought a stock just because the price was low?

I am waiting for the day The NBC ( National Broadcasting Commission) will ban and restrict some Pastor Chris Oyakhilome 's videos and sermons from airing live. We are watching a Full blown Conspiracy theorist incite millions of people against seeking evidence based medical treatments. This is dangerous and harmful at a national and global level. In a world where there is a Health crisis and constant funds are being pumped into research and innovations, this is dangerous for the entire populace. From Salt, to Covid-19 , to Vaccines. These are global issues that can affect lives. NBC you should look into this and do the needful. Nigeria cannot afford to take a hit with our looming Health crisis and figures

I attended a 6-hour brain surgery today as an anaesthesia resident. As the neurosurgeons opened the skull with a saw and operated for 6 hours, the patient lost about 1 litre of blood (humans have only around 5 litres total). To maintain blood volume and pressure, we administered 4 units of packed red blood cells, 3 units of fresh frozen plasma, 4 units of Ringer’s lactate, 2 units of Plasmalyte, and 1 unit of hydroxyethyl starch. That’s about 6 litres of fluid in a 6-hour surgery. Anaesthesiologists are no less important than surgeons.
