@TheSalonDon I might be the only person in the history of Boston Impound Lots to get my car out for free. Police towed it and never reported, marked stolen 2 weeks later Detective calls me - lot fees are 2x value of car. Tells me to get there in the next 15 min and they'll let it go free

I was playing tennis with a guy that works at a tech company. Smaller name, but lots of momentum/buzz, so I was thinking it’s prob close to an IPO. Between sets, I asked him if he was hearing any rumors internally about potentially going public soon. He said something interesting. “I haven’t heard a word. Tight lips from the c-suite, but there will always be signs.” He gave me one of the “signs” he noticed. He went on to explain that the Chief People Officer was an absolute stud… really tight with the CEO, wore many hats, and CRUSHED it. They loved her. But she was leaving. It wasn’t right away though. She stayed on, helped with the transition, ran the all-hands meeting, and even intro’d everyone to her replacement. Very amicable exit huh? Well, apparently she didn’t want/need to leave necessarily, but the next phase of the company required a different skillset. She understood that and stepped away. Her replacement? A new Chief People Officer, but with a legal-heavy background. Why would they drop an elite Chief People Officer that’d been there for 5 years…for a brand new CPO with legal experience? Because they’re about to IPO. There’s clues like this *all over* the markets. Subtle, yet very important, clues. We find these.

There is a park at a recreation center about 200 yards from my house. When my youngest daughter was 13 she went to the park with a couple of neighborhood kids to go swing. She returned home after being gone for less than 30 minutes. I asked her why she was home and she told me "the man at the park said we couldn't be there without parents." So I called the rec director and asked him what was going on. He told me that they don't allow unaccompanied kids under the age of 16. I argued with him that 16 year olds didn't hang out in parks unless they were drinking (or worse). I asked what good are parks when kids can't play in them. He got pissed and told me my kid(s) were banned. This is in a small Southern town of about 5000. It's incredible considering the freedom I had in the 70s and 80s. On a positive note, I donated $2500 to the guy that ran against him for the rec director on the condition that if he won, parks would be open to all well-behaved children. My guy won and told me it was the first time anyone had made a contribution to a parks & rec director race.

My kids used to love walking to Target until the local Target changed their policy to "no unaccompanied kids under 18" It's v frustrating. I'm looking for chances to help my kids be independent & I have basically no societal cooperation on this project
Bethany | Commercial Real Estate@bethanyjbabcock

I just sent my 12 year old in to go get a dozen donuts while I waited in the car. “Mom they will wonder why I’m alone.” “What will I say when they ask?” And so on… Guys this helicopter society is not good for the kids. The big concern is not him doing something but in how society will react to independence. Thats a problem.

@mikemikemac @maxclark @STLChrisH We had an employee get cancer in June 22 and die dec 22. They upped our rate way more than that with our old PEO. I even explained that unlike Jesus, this guy wasn't going to be back in 3 days and we couldn't have a repeat of him getting treatment.

My company pays the first $100,000 of health insurance claims for every covered life. That’s not an exaggeration. That’s a decision we made to try and control premiums for our midsize businesses. Here’s what most people don’t realize: Insurance carriers set your rates based on how YOUR employees use the plan. Your company’s “loss ratio” = how much the carrier pays out vs. how much you paid in premiums. If you’re over 100%… get ready. Your rates are going up--sometimes 30%+. Carriers target a loss payout ratio <80%. So what drives a bad loss ratio? Unhealthy employees? You’ll get hammered. High ER usage for things that could’ve been handled with telemedicine or urgent care? You’ll get hammered. Avoidable procedures and misaligned care? You guessed it--hammered. At our company, we’ve had to rethink how we approach health care. Because when a single ER visit costs $8,000+… it affects everyone’s bottom line. That’s why we’re investing in: 1. Telehealth options that are fast, easy, and affordable 2. Mental health access on demand 3. Employee education on care options and cost 4. Stronger wellness initiatives Controlling healthcare costs isn’t just about shopping for better plans. It’s about helping our team use the plan better--so we can keep providing great benefits without breaking the bank. If you're a fellow business owner battling healthcare costs, I’d love to hear what’s working for you.

@maxclark @STLChrisH Largely agree with PEOs at that size, but 1 year of over-utilization and your renewal cost will explode. Dealing with this now, +41% for the same coverage in the 11-50 tier

@STLChrisH Many people don't understand just how hard health insurance is for companies 1-10 forgetaboutit 11-50 no good options, expensive 51+ finally at the size where you can do things My #1 argument for PEOs is health insurance when you're under 100 employees

@nickabouzeid @dvassallo It's one of the first things a buyer will look at in an acquisition; you don't know when states will come knocking so it's considered a liability until then. Have gone through this with a state at $8M-$10M ARR; huge time sink with an audit and then a court case that lasted yrs

@PedestrianTakes Super location dependent imo. My 8 y/o rides his bike around town, grabs small groceries for us, picks up bagel order. Many parents around us push their kids to do the same; be the change you want to see

There’s this weird self reinforcing thing among parents now too. No one wants to be seen as the irresponsible parent who lets their kids play outside unsupervised so no one lets their kids play outside unsupervised even if some of us want to.
nxthompson@nxthompson

This is crazy and kind of heartbreaking. In a huge survey of young kids about phones and technology, they all say they want to be out playing in the real world. But parents don't let them out unsupervised. So they're stuck on their phones. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

@LizNix Expanded this house from 1012 sqft to 1600 sqft in 2018. The only way to expand it more on this lot is to demolish and build a new house, with stronger footings.
