🚨 “Vance doesn’t participate in negotiations; if he did, he would have a better understanding of what this so-called ‘just a patch of land’ really means,” Zelenskyy responded to JD Vance. CONTEXT: U.S. Vice President JD Vance claims Russia and Ukraine are prolonging the conflict over a negligible portion of territory, questioning if it is “worth losing hundreds of thousands of additional Russian and Ukrainian young men”, and criticised Ukrainian President Zelensky's "scandalous" comments about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. RESPONSE: The Vice President (Vance), with all due respect, doesn't participate in negotiations between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia. And I think if he and other officials were involved, they’d have a better understanding of what this so-called ‘just a patch of land’ really means - what is actually Ukraine’s sovereign territory, critically important for security, with strong defensive structures and fortifications, and home to nearly 200,000 people. And understanding that Russia's goal from the start of the occupation, the first occupations, this goal has always been there (to get that land) in one form or another, in one order or another, right? And so we understand what the occupation of the East actually means. It's an opportunity to prepare a staging ground, you could say, for future offensive actions. So before doing anything, you need to know the details and have detailed security guarantees. Yes, we're talking about strong security guarantees, but right now we simply don't have them. Ukraine just doesn't have the security guarantees to discuss other steps. And of course, every square meter of our land is Ukrainian land. It is not— with all due respect to any of our partners—definitely not theirs.

After the liberation of Mariupol, the world will see thousands of Buchas in the city of Mariupol. Mariupol was under siege for 84 days, and for 84 days it was destroyed by the fascist-Nazi Muscovites with missiles, shells, and aerial bombs around the clock and without interruption.

MORE: Iran has continued to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz despite the ceasefire, which is making vessels reticent to transit the strait. Iran is levying these threats so that it can extract tolls on traffic through an international waterway. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains significantly low amid Iran’s lingering threats and uncertainty over a fragile ceasefire. Commercial maritime tracking data showed only five Iranian‑flagged cargo vessels entered the strait, while just three international oil tankers, six international cargo vessels, and one unknown Iranian-flagged vessel exited via Iran’s alternative route between April 7 at 2:00 PM ET and April 8 at 2:00 PM ET. The S&P Global Market Intelligence recorded that Iran permitted only four vessels to transit on April 7, the lowest daily total so far in April. Major shipping companies, including Maersk and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, continue to suspend or tightly limit transits, citing the absence of clear rules and security guarantees. Shipping and maritime intelligence executives told the Financial Times that daily traffic has fallen to just 10 to 15 vessels, compared with roughly 135 per day before the crisis. Around 800 tankers are now waiting to transit, with an estimated 300 to 400 vessels effectively stranded inside the Persian Gulf.

Iran Update Evening Special Report, April 8, 2026: US President Donald Trump announced on April 7 that the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire deal mediated by Pakistan. Trump stated that Iran sent a ten-point proposal to form the basis of upcoming negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, on April 10. Other Key Takeaways: Senior US and Israeli officials stated on April 7 and 8 that the Israeli campaign in Lebanon is not a part of the US-Iran ceasefire deal. Hezbollah officials claimed that unspecified actors informed the group that it would be a party to the ceasefire deal. US President Donald Trump told PBS News on April 8 that Lebanon is not included in the US-Iran ceasefire deal. The IDF conducted the largest number of airstrikes against Hezbollah personnel and infrastructure throughout Lebanon, including central Beirut, since the start of the Israeli campaign in Lebanon. The IDF struck over 100 Hezbollah headquarters, command-and-control centers, missile launch sites, and Hezbollah drone unit and Radwan Force sites in Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley. Iran has continued to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz despite the ceasefire, which is making vessels reticent to transit the strait. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains significantly low amid Iran’s lingering threats and uncertainty over a fragile ceasefire.· Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi had to convince Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commanders to accept the US proposal for a ceasefire, according to a regional source familiar with the talks speaking to Axios. The ceasefire follows reports that a group of veteran hardline IRGC commanders has consolidated power within the Iranian regime in recent weeks and is playing an increasingly central role in decision-making, such as appointments to key positions.

APPLEBAUM: Victor Orbán has been in charge of Hungary for 16 years. He has used his power as a democratically elected leader to take over the institutions of the state, judiciary, media, bureaucracy, universities. Thanks to that and unbelievably high level of corruption, Hungary is now one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in EU, with major problems in healthcare and education. Yet in the campaign he’s not talking about any of that. Instead, he’s pushing mythical fantasy that Ukrainians are going to invade Hungary to create fear. He’s trailing in the polls by about 20%. The only question is whether he will halt the election, change the result, or create some kind of outrage.

⚡️ Ukrainians destroy a bridge with drones for the first time — The Telegraph The Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out a unique operation that lasted about two months. The target was a bridge over the Konka River, which Russian forces used to supply positions on the islands and shell Kherson. According to The Telegraph, Ukrainian forces initially tried to destroy the crossing using conventional means — airstrikes and HIMARS. However, the bridge proved too resilient, and these attacks failed to achieve the desired result. The breakthrough came after a Russian soldier published a photo taken directly under the bridge structure. The image revealed vulnerable elements of the supports — and that’s exactly where the strikes were focused. The 426th Marine Corps Unmanned Systems Regiment then joined the operation. They developed a special 50 kg shaped charge designed for precise structural damage. Instead of trying to destroy the bridge from above, Ukrainian forces began systematically weakening it from below. For this, they used heavy British Malloy T-150 drones. These drones can carry significant payloads, effectively serving as “flying platforms.” They approached the bridge and carefully lowered explosive charges on cables directly onto the identified weak points beneath the supports. Such missions were repeated dozens of times over roughly two months. During this period, up to 1.5 tons of explosives were reportedly delivered, gradually critically weakening the structure. In the end, once the bridge was sufficiently damaged and had lost its integrity, a final missile strike brought it down. Interestingly, the Malloy T-150 was originally designed as a cargo drone, not a weapon. But Ukraine has once again shown how civilian technology can be adapted to real battlefield conditions.

BREAKING: President Trump is considering a plan to "punish" some NATO countries by moving US troops out of countries which he deemed "unhelpful" to the Iran War, per WSJ. Details include: 1. The proposal would involve moving US troops from "unhelpful" countries and into countries who were "more supportive" of the Iran War 2. The plan is early in conception and one of several the White House is discussing to punish NATO 3. The US currently has around 84,000 troops stationed across Europe 4. Countries that could benefit because they are viewed as supportive include Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Greece, US officials said US-NATO relations appear to be degrading.

BREAKING: Iran has told mediators it will be limiting the number of ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz to around 12 per day and impose tolls under the ceasefire, per WSJ. This is a sharp reversal from last night's statements from President Trump claiming a "complete opening" of the Strait of Hormuz. Today, just 4 ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, the fewest of any day in April so far. The US is still pushing publicly for a free and open strait, but Iran is "not showing a willingness to loosen its grip." Oil prices are back above $95/barrel.
