i used to complain about how often i had to read, analyze, and write about 1984 and fahrenheit 451 in high school and college (bc i did each no less than 3 times) bc it got so boring and repetitive but now im so thankful bc i see how necessary and relevant they still are,

you can also just read the fanfics and not be defensive about liking them more than literature, like thats completely okay. you dont have to drag a literally organ that controls all bodily functions to justify you not reading actual books. what are we doing anymore 😭

I don't know the context of this but yes, I agree. The most important thing is reading, whatever it is; reading purely fun books can be great. I love rereading Agatha Christie, for instance. But challenging yourself with ideas and/or language is so important too. AND rewarding.

No one is saying not to read and celebrate fanfic, they’re saying to stop pretending it’s 1:1 published fiction. Not only that: the original argument was to read MORE than just fanfic during your reading time. Let’s stop obfuscating the point being willfully obtuse about this.

the issue is that BOOKS are falling in quality and a ton of published works lately are fanfic-level literature. It's not that fanfics are suddenly better, it's that published books have dropped massively in quality

read older books then. most romance paperbacks written now aren't really my thing, so I read stuff written in like the 80s/90s/early 00s instead. easy.

Funny thing abt the whole fanfic/literature debate stuff is that similar effects happen to comic book writers immersed in the big 2 too long. It becomes immediately clear how rudderless a lot of their original work is

Readers deserve quality works! Studying the craft of writing (allowing for rule breaking) is your best bet for doing the best you can, writers!❤️
