What started as a simple idea has become a powerful symbol of compassion in motion. Meet Keona Keona’s journey began with unimaginable heartbreak, but today, her story is one of resilience, healing, and hope. At just four weeks old, Keona was diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome, a severe form of abusive head trauma. She spent a month in a coma with two broken legs, fighting for her life before she had even begun it. Keona was later adopted by a loving family in Louisiana, who became her greatest advocates, giving her a second chance at life and a future filled with possibility. Because of time spent on life support, Keona required a tracheostomy to breathe, leaving scarring near her voice box. But in 2015, hope arrived in the form of Dr. Sohit Kanotra. At just 18 months old, Keona underwent a complex airway reconstruction surgery, and for the very first time, she spoke. When Dr. Kanotra relocated across the country, Keona’s family remained committed to continuing her care. With the support of Miracle Flights, they were able to travel to UCLA, ensuring she could stay with the specialist who changed her life. Now 10 years old, Keona is thriving. She’s bubbly, loves gymnastics, and dreams of becoming a doctor one day. Her most recent Miracle Flight brought her back to UCLA for a bronchoscopy, an important step in ensuring her continued progress and long-term health. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, stories like Keona’s remind us what’s possible when families can access the care their children need. This Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, meet Shessid, a bright and resilient nine-year-old whose strength shines as sweetly as her spirit. Shessid is full of light, bringing joy to those around her with her determination and warm personality. Like many children living with cerebral palsy, a group of neurological disorders that affect movement, muscle tone, and posture, her journey requires specialized care and ongoing support. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in 345 children in the United States. For Shessid, accessing the care she needs means traveling from California to San Antonio, Texas, where she receives treatment at the Teleton Children’s Rehabilitation Institute. That’s where Miracle Flights steps in, making these essential trips possible for her and her family. With access to specialized rehabilitation, Shessid continues to grow stronger, reach new milestones, and share her incredible spirit with everyone she meets. And now, Shessid has something sweet to share with all of you, a reminder of the joy, resilience, and hope that lives within every child we serve. Meet Valerie! Valerie is a brave and inspiring young woman whose smile lights up every room. Despite years of pain from rare medical conditions, she lives by her motto: “It’s going to hurt anyway, so might as well have fun.” Before Miracle Flights, Valerie endured unbearable pain, unable to eat without suffering, relying on a feeding tube, and facing diagnoses so rare and severe that most doctors couldn’t help. With Miracle Flights, her family was able to travel across the country to reach the surgeons and specialists she desperately needed. After six life-changing surgeries, Valerie is thriving. Today, she’s a student at the University of Texas at Austin, living on campus, making friends, joining organizations, and finally experiencing life as a young adult. Simple joys like eating, walking, and even styling her hair are no longer painful. Her journey isn’t easy, but it’s filled with hope, courage, and possibility thanks to Miracle Flights and the generosity of supporters who make stories like hers possible.
