“If we are to have another contest in [our future], I predict the dividing line will not be Mason & Dixons, but between patriotism & intelligence on the one side and superstition, ambition, & ignorance on the other” -President Ulysses S Grant 1875

I find this discourse perplexing because the solution seems straigthforward: make university marks almost entirely dependent on lengthy in-person exams that combine handwritten essays with oral questioning. Why is this even a conversation? Are there implementation barriers or something?
Luiza Jarovsky, PhD@LuizaJarovsky

🚨 University professors have been saying AI is completely destroying learning and that we'll soon have an AI-powered, semi-illiterate workforce. Here's a glimpse into the educational apocalypse: "Sarah, a freshman at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, said she first used ChatGPT to cheat during the spring semester of her final year of high school. (...) After getting acquainted with the chatbot, Sarah used it for all her classes: Indigenous studies, law, English, and a “hippie farming class” called Green Industries. “My grades were amazing,” she said. “It changed my life.” Sarah continued to use AI when she started college this past fall. Why wouldn’t she? Rarely did she sit in class and not see other students’ laptops open to ChatGPT. Toward the end of the semester, she began to think she might be dependent on the website. She already considered herself addicted to TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Reddit, where she writes under the username maybeimnotsmart. “I spend so much time on TikTok,” she said. “Hours and hours, until my eyes start hurting, which makes it hard to plan and do my schoolwork. With ChatGPT, I can write an essay in two hours that normally takes 12.” - "By November, Williams estimated that at least half of his students were using AI to write their papers. Attempts at accountability were pointless. Williams had no faith in AI detectors, and the professor teaching the class instructed him not to fail individual papers, even the clearly AI-smoothed ones. “Every time I brought it up with the professor, I got the sense he was underestimating the power of ChatGPT, and the departmental stance was, ‘Well, it’s a slippery slope, and we can’t really prove they’re using AI,’” Williams said. “I was told to grade based on what the essay would’ve gotten if it were a ‘true attempt at a paper.’ So I was grading people on their ability to use ChatGPT.” - AI in education is a serious topic, and many schools and universities are blindly jumping into the "AI-first" wave without considering short and long-term consequences. It would be great to hear more from teachers and educators to understand potential solutions. This might be a great opportunity for rethinking the education system and how students are assessed. - 👉 Link to the full article below. 👉 To learn more about AI's legal and ethical challenges, join my newsletter's 94,700+ subscribers (link below).

@RepBrendanBoyle It’s both, Boyle, and that’s just a fact. Go read American Slavery, American Freedom by Edmund S Morgan. You can’t really love the country unless you look at it for what is really is, good bad and ugly

Wrong. The single most significant event since Christ has been the American Revolution. We are by no means a perfect country. But the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence were radical for their time and still are today.

@901Meg @katie_honan @bern_hogan Oh right on that’s good to know, but damn does that get overshadowed and undermined by the “How DOES this couple live on ONLY 500k?!” I’m a public school teacher in the city and this series is a constant subject of ridicule among the staff

Hasan Piker said America deserved 9/11, endorsed Hamas, called Jews “inbred,” and called for US senator to be assassinated. So why is @AbdulElSayed campaigning with him? @MikeRogersForMI is the only candidate who will keep Michigan safe and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

New Yorkers deserve a responsible path forward for their budget. That means identifying savings rather than raising property taxes, and standing firmly against any cuts to critical services.

@GoodVibePolitik I don’t understand, she’s literally saying she’s not gonna send money to Israel and they can figure it out for themselves. She’s doing the exact policy move you’re asking for, but you’re pissed at her rhetoric?

@davidfrum People are using synagogues as cover to sell stolen West Bank land. The cynicism and cover for Israel’s human rights violations is bottomless.

What kind of political movement would even *want* to harass worshippers and schoolchildren on their way in and out? It was only 14 days ago that a Hezbollah gunman tried to commit a mass casualty attack on a Michigan synagogue and daycare center.
Jacob N. Kornbluh@jacobkornbluh

🚨 Breaking: The NYC Council voted to pass the synagogue protection bill with a veto-proof majority of 44 of 51 members. The bill to create a buffer zone for protests outside educational centers also passed, but only by a 30–19 margin — Mamdani could veto it if he chooses.

@MacroscopeEcon You understand it’s his job to diagnose problems and provide solutions right? We don’t have problems with making new technologies, great, but we do have very big problem with ensuring those technologies aren’t just used to make the rich richer and screw everyone else

Senator Sanders likes to explain what’s wrong in society, which is valuable. But today when I asked him what caused American prosperity in the first place, he had little to say. You cannot sustainably redistribute prosperity if you don’t understand what creates it to begin with.

AI and robotics will radically transform our economy, politics and the world. Should a handful of multibillionaires decide the future of humanity? I don’t think so. Watch my town hall on the future of AI at Stanford with @RoKhanna. youtube.com/live/Wx18tNmNY…
