@Machzero0

The sum will not add up. It is madness to rack our brains over this sum. But there is nothing else we can do except try to add up this sum.

@Antonio82114325 @zulways having conscription and reservists and such is not the same as constantly cycling people between active combat and civilian life. six weeks at a time is not enough time for soldiers to get acclimated to combat or for civilians to get back to their normal productivity

@denver_crank @ettingermentum definitely runs on the libertarian ballot line if he goes for it, they might be losers but they have ballot access. wasting all the minuscule resources of a third-party run on getting ballot access is a terrible idea gonna be hard to get votes with modern polarization levels tho

@ettingermentum that would be hilarious, i wonder if caucusing with the libertarians might make the knife he's looking to twist a little bit bigger? maybe not though, it doesn't feel like they've had the same pull for the last couple of years despite a great market for embarrassed republicans.

@NondescriptRed this era’s Lenin is obviously gonna be cut from the same mold as the original: born into middle-class academia, radicalized at a young age, spent most of their entire working life as a ‘professional revolutionary’, mostly overseas yes i suppose this does sound like calla walsh-

@nise_yoshimi the purges were really fucking terrible, deeply depressing, but it seems like a historian should grasp why the third or fourth iteration of the German Militarism machine would not produce the same sort of internal knifing as a 20-year old state. they purged the SA instead!

its always extremely like. okay you don't need to be pro-stalin on say the purges. but like, when you say "meanwhile in germany hitler didn't do the purges". why is there a need for that comparison, pal? where are you going with this?

Tooze's treatment of the USSR in Wages of destruction is so refreshing just because coming from Soviet pop history I'm so used to American writers getting extremely weird when it comes to comparing the Soviet Union and the Nazis

@atlanticesque If what you're saying is true, Schwarzentruber Amish would be evading taxes, and would be in trouble for it since it is well known they do not have SSN and are ineligible for an ITIN

Most people hate paying taxes, but when I tell people I don't have a social security number they often respond in contempt. Why wouldn't I pay taxes? I answer this question by sharing a story about Dorothy Day, the Catholic Worker who resisted the IRS and won

@DixieHussar @Gaismair the Slave Power basically *was* the American state. the officers and bureaucrats abandoned what little government there was en masse and the republicans had to build a new one from scratch in wartime by bribing War Democrats and letting profiteers do whatever they wanted.

There was the Whig Party & the Republican Party of 1856. Any other organization like the “ACP” or “DSA” doesn’t come close in opposition to the American state & it’s useless to try

@UnlistedTweeter @pereiraocomtio @castle51020 @KeasarNor @Yuber8foids i think the implicit “by HUAC” at the end there is pretty obvious. seems unlikely that Lev “root out the counterrevolutionaries without mercy, cowards and dastards will not escape the bullet” Trotsky would ever say “my enemies shouldn’t be suppressed as a matter of principle”

@Prof_Werewolf @nise_yoshimi @souljagoyteller i know nothing about Gorby but I’d assume he refused to use the army any more than he did for the same reason everyone else refrained from military coups and such. as politically powerful as the red army was, it simply wasn’t built for the task of coups and internal repression.

gorbachev is often depicted even by communists as this weak-willed liberal. Really he was as ruthless as any soviet politician. he was just working in service to a different ideological vision. but he was a True Believer and he was pulling Xi Jinping moves for it

@atlanticesque i mean as someone who lives in the sticks and is watching a bunch of deep red republicans go crazy over a data center, it’s not a leftist thing at all, it’s just the universal American belief that nothing should ever change

While that’s probably a good idea, it does not matter because the real reason those leftists oppose data centers is not water use or noise pollution but a deep entropic resentment against prosperity and against progress and against ordered existence entirely and their own selves
Jeremiah Johnson 🌐@JeremiahDJohns

If we just required farms to pay market rate for the water they use, magically all of the water issues people worry about with data centers would vanish.

@mee___maw i think i probably wouldn’t have a “job” in the conventional sense, I’d spend my time being a member of a militarized estate/ethnic group that received land and privileges in exchange for serving as cavalry in wartime and whenever the Tsar needed to brutally crush a rebellion.

@jorfolle I don’t hate Kaiserreich but it does feel like the most “things happen this way because that’s how they happened” althist around. how do you even have a 1939 European WW2 when Germany’s only opposition is a rump socialist bloc in the west and half a White Russia in the east

@dark_ager2 @Taccm77 @torgojones @Pirat_Nation Yeah they’re priced differently because people are willing to pay more for a bigger game. Is your argument that $20 games are always an easy sell than $60 games, so that makes the player count numbers more/less impressive? I hate when I have to guess what someone’s arguing lmao

Mixtape, the industry plant game accused of review inflation, received A$90,000 in public funding from VicScreen, an agency of the Victorian state government in Australia. Despite its short playtime and flop Steam player count, it has earned widespread high review scores including IGN’s 10/10, along with praise from many journalists and influencers.

@dark_ager2 @Taccm77 @torgojones @Pirat_Nation obviously does, though. say people play games in 1.5 hour chunks. your 3 hour game is going to get 2 days of play from a player, your 30 hour game is going to get 20 days. if each had 100k players spread through the year, one would have 500 daily and one would have 5000 daily
