@UNCBarstool this is the new standard. UNC just doesnt have the prestige or resources to attract good players to chapel hill

So today, our 6 seed Tar Heels lost to an A10 team. We were up by 18 with 13 to play. We were out scored by more than 1 point per minute from that point on. All year we snuck away with late game comebacks or holding off late game comebacks. The standard is ruined without change.

The same @TheAndyKatz who tabbed NC State a “Final Four Dark Horse” in the preseason excludes Caleb Wilson from his first, second, and third All-America teams. Wilson was second-team AP All-America. NC State was bounced in Dayton. Does Katz watch hoops?

VCU's 11-point comeback in the final five minutes of regulation is the second largest in the history of the NCAAT, per CBS Sports research. Carolina missed its last eight field goals in the game. Wow, wow, wow, wow.

A CLASSIC in Greenville. VCU comes back from 19 points to beat UNC 82-78. It's the largest blown/lead comeback in the first round in men's NCAAT history. Terrence Hill Jr. with 34/5/5 off the bench. Incredible.

Is Syracuse an elite program any more or merely just a second tier ACC team? Orange Basketball Has Been Turned Down By Their Top Two Head Coaching Options --Josh Schertz of Saint Louis and Bryan Hodgson of South Florida. I miss Jim Boeheim, Pearl, Melo.

It may feel this way a touch since I'm sitting right in front of the Siena section, but it's not a stretch to say the entirety of Bon Secours Wellness Arena is rooting against Duke. Killer tournament vibes in Greenville right now.

@LO_Wolfpack Big fan of Will. He’s not afraid of the job and his expectations aren’t influenced by who the competition is. Dude is different.

This will sound like copium, but I’ll live with that today - I like the idea of Will Wade attacking the Offseason from a viewpoint of disappointment. He’s a relentless perfectionist that knows what it takes to be successful. Fortune tends to favor dudes like that.

Last year we fired a coach who had won the ACC and been to the Final Four the year before. We quickly hired Wade, who was the consensus first choice of the fanbase. Today after just one year on the job, there is WAY too much criticism of Wade. Let the man cook!

If I were Will Wade, I’d take that LSU job right now bc that fire in Raleigh just gonna be hotter and hotter after this season. Bc Sidney Lowe, Mark Gottfried and Kevin Keatts all had the “beat Carolina, flame out in the tournament” years and it wasn’t enough to save them.

@LO_Wolfpack Nothing has changed for me. I believe the actual quote was “we will be in the top ‘part’ of the ACC” and “going to the NCAA tournament.” Both were accomplished and yet I believe he is more disappointed than anyone. Frustrations this year, sure. But we’re in good hands

My post earlier this morning got me thinking — so I did some work. The loudest complaints I've seen this year all follow the same script: acknowledge the season was decent, but hammer Will Wade for saying at his introductory presser that NC State would "finish in the top part of the ACC and make the NCAA Tournament." Which is… exactly what happened. 7th in a loaded 18-team ACC. Projected 10 seed in the NCAAT. But let's set aside the semantics of what constitutes "the top part" and look at what actually just happened in historical context — because the numbers make the complaints look absurd. No matter how you slice it, *Will Wade's first season at NC State is no worse than the 4th-best regular season in the 35 years since Jim Valvano was fired — and arguably no worse than the 9th-best in that entire span.* There are only THREE seasons in those 35 years that are clearly and markedly better. No parsing. No weighting gymnastics. Just better: 2003-04 Sendek: NCAA 3-seed 1990-91 Robinson: NCAA 6-seed 2001-02 Sendek: NCAA 7-seed That's the Tier 1 list. Three seasons. In thirty-five years. After that, you're into a Tier 2 cluster where splitting hairs across KenPom, RPI/NET, SRS, and seeding can move teams around — but they all look very similar. I used Mark Gottfried's near-identical 2012-13 and 2014-15 seasons as cut point from Tier One. In '14-15, State posted a #31 RPI, an 8-seed, and a #25 SRS ranking. Wade's first season delivered a #36 NET, a #30 SRS, and a projected 10-seed. That's how thin the margin is in this tier. The Tier 2 group: 2012-13 Gottfried: NCAA 8-seed 2014-15 Gottfried: NCAA 8-seed 2004-05 Sendek: NCAA 10-seed 2005-06 Sendek: NCAA 10-seed 2002-03 Sendek: NCAA 9-seed Even if you stretch your criteria generously, this season is no worse than 9th-best out of 35. That's what Wade built in Year One — with a roster he had months to assemble, in a conference that's sending 8+ teams to the Tournament this year. Sit with that for a second, and then decide if you still want to complain about finishing 7th in the ACC not being "the top part." Give me a break.
statefansnation@statefansnation

Anyone would have killed for this last year after we didn't even qualify for the ACC Tournament. To think how *close* we were to a truly special season with 4 or 5 losses that we clearly should have won is [insert your own adjective here]. My personal perspective is that this season is effectively the floor that we will ever see with Will Wade. Now, think about this for a moment --- this regular season is very, very consistent with what was effectively the ceiling of every NC State coach we've had since Jimmy V. I bet we haven't had more than four regular seasons this good in 35 years. And, Coach delivered it in his FIRST season after not getting hired until late March last year.
