Hello world! The Baker Lab is opening in mid October, 2021 at @LovelaceBio in ABQ, NM. Excited to keep serving up research on influenza, host-switch, and alternative RNA splicing. Actively recruiting an experienced technician & postdoc: thebakerlab.com/opportunities #LoveVirology

A lot of people seem to think there's some kind of tradeoff between supporting your trainees in their career aspirations and your own lab's 'productivity'. There isn't. Your trainee's achievements are also an output of your lab, whether you're listed as an author or not.

Does a postdoc have a responsibility to tell their current supervisor if they're going to publish a paper with another lab?

Any way you splice it, MECR spells trouble for influenza. Check out this cool story by @BakerVirusMaker
Mehle Lab@MehleLab

New work led by @BakerVirusMaker: What happens when host cells dual purpose critical genes with cryptic antiviral function? Viruses are forced to “choose” between two bad options – suffer the antagonism or attack the essential gene and limit resources to make progeny. 👇🧵1/7

Our paper is now live at PLOS Pathogens. Several new polymerase structures came out since we submitted, and we were happy include these and discuss the potential impact of phosphorylation, especially on template exit channel formation. journals.plos.org/plospathogens/…
Mehle Lab@MehleLab

@PUNusualSuspect makes our next step in understanding how phosphorylation directly controls the influenza virus polymerase. Spoiler alert - we find a phosphosite that specifically represses transcription while leaving replication intact. Great collaboration with Coon lab again.

Check out our work where we describe a cellular role for IFIT2, with a little flu sprinkled in. This is the culmination of efforts by many, but special thanks to Vy for finding IFIT2, @tinagoneviral who rounded out the paper, and the rest of the lab for discussions in lab/the lib
Mehle Lab@MehleLab

Excited for our paper on influenza virus and IFIT2 now at @NatureMicrobiol : A mystery in 3 parts where things aren’t always what they seem. It has something for everyone, with CRISPR screens, CLIP-Seq, ribosome profiling, and ribosome pausing. 1/n nature.com/articles/s4156…

Excited to share my latest research story, "Post-transcriptional regulation of antiviral gene expression by N6-methyladenosine" now posted as a preprint at biorxiv.org/content/10.110… We @TheHornerLab are interested in molecular interactions btwn RNA viruses & host cells...

Does #ASV2020 have you even more excited for virology? Love working with a fun team? Love creative science? Love owning your project and career development? Love puns? (OK, maybe the thing about puns isn't required). DM, see attached or check mehlelab.com.

Courage is knowing an experiment might not work and doing it anyway. Stupidity is the same. And that's why science is hard.

Turns out there is a lot of debate about how to correctly pronounce enzyme names. Thanks to @JasonWilliamsNY for pointing out that a definitive resource was lacking... it took us a few months, but you can now find enzyme name pronunciation on all @NEBiolabs RE product pages.

Switched all my sucrose gradients to organic GMO-free sugar and I can already tell the #ribosomes I'm purifying are way healthier. How can I tell? They won't shut up about it.
