One of the reasons why obesity is so much more pronounced in the rural South/Midwest (in addition to the type of nutrition that's typical here) is the inability to walk anywhere. Very few do farm work anymore, and if you don't have a large property to walk, your life consists of driving to and from work, the store, restaurants, etc. Now, you could walk on the roads, but that's very ill-advised considering the lack of shoulders. You feel exposed. This may not be the case in VERY rural places, but most of the South/Midwest is populated enough that cars are coming at the very least, every few minutes. Suburban living is attractive in part because of the freedom to walk places and the safety of self-contained neighborhoods where one will not be mugged (as is the case in cities) if they go for a stroll. What are the solutions to this? How do we encourage physical activity in places that aren't really conducive to it?

Important Reminder: You need way more money from ages 30-50 than you will at age 65 and beyond. Not enough people consider this. My current lifestyle at 41 years old requires WAY more cash flow than what it will require at 65 when I’m retired (inflation aside). Here are current monthly expenses I have today that will be gone at 65. $2,200 401K/IRA contributions $1,500 Mortgage (P and I only) $1,000 Taxable Brokerage $900 kids activities $500 kids groceries $400 529 contributions That’s $6,500/month I pay today that I won’t have to pay a dime of when I’m a 65-year-old retired empty nester. Moral of the story… you won’t need nearly as much as you think to have an awesome retirement one day.
