Cool new findings showing that mitochondrial biology is influenced by gravity. Of the few things that change when cells and bodies leave Earth's surface, gravity seems sufficient to decrease mitochondrial gene expression. If mitochondrial gene expression decreases, it becomes harder for electrons to flow through the electron transport chain. And energy transformation capacity decreases, possibly increasing energy resistance: how difficult it is for food-derived electrons to reach oxygen in mitochondria. This study follows earlier work in 2020 showing that mitochondrial changes are among the most robust changes that occur with spaceflight.
