@jameswallner Aren’t you overlooking the possibility that Republicans don’t actually want the SAVE Act? They just want something that rallies their base and will be a convenient scapegoat if/when they get crushed in the midterms.

Filling the amendment tree was a mistake. If Republicans were forcing Democrats to mount a talking filibuster, they should make sure the amendment they want to pass is the pending question and move to table anything Democrats offer. But now the pending question is something else.

@nikosunity @Acyn Also why would Iran be trying to sell the oil if it isn’t going to get the money?

Collins: Why would you ease sanctions on a country we are at war with? Perry: Do you think they're going to be able to get the money? Collins: Yes. They are getting the money Perry: How are they getting the money? Is it being wired by China and India? Collins: Yes Perry: To what bank? In 15 minutes, it can be gone. They don’t even have internet.

@QuinHillyer Lookie here! Two leftist writers high-fiving over a column calling for Louisiana's two Republican Senators to vote against the Republican President's choice for DHS Secretary. Anyone surprised?

The Prime Minister of Qatar even now suggests that Trump is the pathetic servant of the Russian dictator. "Because everyone knows who the main beneficiary of this war is, and dragging the whole region into this conflict is."

I hope this goes nowhere. Honors like this are best bestowed after someone has served. Especially now, this would be a huge mistake that would hurt the President and his cause. Don’t do it. Trump’s face on a gold coin? His hand-picked panel will decide. washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/…

@daysbwtweenus @golub Well, considering how we treat countries we are “allied” with (eg, Denmark, Canada), being allied with us isn’t much of a benefit either.

@golub First, the US is not allied with Ukraine. Second, you should be grateful for all the US's done for Ukraine. Third, it is both moral and strategic and how Ukraine is playing this drone stuff. Respect.

@QuinHillyer @NOLAnews Cassidy won’t even call RFK Jr. to a hearing to find out his response to the serious allegations made by Susan Monarez last September. At least not before his primary. But at least Cassidy feels bad about it. Kennedy is as happy as a pig in slop.

I doubt the Europeans really expected Trump to attack Greenland, but I don’t think they were 100 percent sure he wouldn’t (and I can hardly blame them). And they recognized, correctly, that they needed to respond to Trump’s threats both as a short term political matter and in order to start developing the military self-sufficiency that they apparently will need if they don’t want to start speaking Russian. I remember how during the 2016 primaries Ted Cruz “joked” that if Trump were president we might wake up one day and find out we had bombed Denmark. Doesn’t really seem very funny now.

I respect your opinion but disagree here. Where I completely understand Trump’s willingness to remove Maduro and put an end to the threat of Iran, thinking he would actually invade / attack a NATO ally is a “bridge too, too far” even for him. Trump talks lots of shit for dramatic effect and no one seems to recognize this negotiation style even after a decade of his bluster. Taking Trump seriously but not literally is correct response.

I'm seeing a lot of my friends take this position but I think three things: 1) it's revisionist and an attempt to resolve cognitive dissonance over one of the most inexplicably bad things the administration has ever done. 2) it's a canard to say "the invasion threat wasn't serious, therefore this is a non-issue." The threat was a huge issue whether it was credible or not. 3) Denmark was absolutely right to take it seriously regardless, and their moves to that effect helped force the administration to back down, not out of fear of losing an armed confrontation, but by forcing key contingents who were quietly tolerating Trump's antics to get serious about pushing back

@neoavatara There's nothing funny about this. Just more of Trump's boorish and despicable behavior. Japan's PM was not amused. Trump doesn't have the filter most people have to avoid being offensive.

Israeli assessments indicate the U.S. is preparing a military operation to secure the Strait of Hormuz, with a major force buildup already underway. The campaign is reportedly expected to last around two weeks, aimed at restoring maritime traffic and ending Iran’s blockade. Israeli officials believe Israel may support the operation, likely through intelligence and operational coordination, as Washington weighs options to reopen the strategic waterway amid escalating attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure. Does the observation that opposition to Trump’s first term cabinet nominations was 550% higher refer to (1) the percentage of nominations rejected or (2) the number of senators who voted against confirmation? I assume it’s the latter because the former makes no sense numerically. If so, I am guessing that this number mostly is explained by Harry Reid’s elimination of the filibuster for executive nominations. And therefore I would expect Biden’s numbers would be similar. Am I wrong?

Mullin needed to apologize, say it was the heat of the moment and he made a mistake. At that point Paul could have let it go. But Mullin didn't do that, despite being given ample opportunity. I don't want a hotheaded DHS secretary.
Andrew Kolvet@AndrewKolvet

Sen. Markwayne Mullin is the kind of guy who can exchange words with a Union Boss, only to bury the hatchet and have that very same Union Boss sitting right behind him as a character witness at his confirmation hearing. Sen. Paul needs to let whatever grudge he’s harboring go, just like MWM and Sean O’Brien did.

This wasn’t a problem for other Republican presidents or even for Trump in his first term. The problem arises because (1) Trump has appointed an attorney general who has zero credibility and openly acts as if she is his personal lawyer; (2) she appoints interim US attorneys who are unqualified hacks and sycophants; and (3) Trump demands that DOJ lawyers do his personal bidding regardless of the law. Therefore, it is not surprising that judges (who have clear statutory authority to appoint interim US attorneys once the initial term expires) are exercising their right to appoint people they view as qualified for the job.

When a Republican is president, the legal system works as such: Democrats get to pick their judges via judge shopping, and those judges get to pick their prosecutors. Democrats get to pick their judges via blue slips in their home states. But then when a Democrat is president, all of the above would be seen as insurrection from the GOP.
