I spent the last few months talking to people across the political spectrum, and to people who want nothing to do with politics at all. Here is what I learned. We are not a divided country. We are a country being divided, on purpose, by an American oligarchy that profits from the fight. They’ve captured our government, denied our healthcare, looted our treasury, and saddled us with crippling debt. I believe in a New New Deal. Healthcare as a human right. The right of every family to a decent home, and an end to endless wars. And a dividend paid to every American from the AI economy, because these machines were built on the whole of human inheritance. That inheritance belongs to all of us, and not just to the handful of men playing God with our very existence. And none of it happens if we just move on. Donald Trump, his family, and his administration are robbing us blind, not just of our money, but of our faith in one another, and they have to answer for it. Truth and reconciliation, not revenge. Then we break the system that let them do it. The question is not whether we will lose our democracy. The question is whether we will fight to take back what has already been stolen. I learned in recovery that you can’t heal what you won’t name. Neither can a country.

Yesterday, I had a detailed call with Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S., @MarkDWiseman. I stressed to him, on behalf of millions of concerned Americans, just how extremely important and urgent it is to put out all the fires harming U.S. air quality. But this past week, Americans have seen an appalling, ongoing dereliction of duty by a @WhiteHouse that has failed to warn the public of a serious public health threat or coordinate a national response. The @POTUS & his staff chose to put public attention on election integrity instead of serious health risks posed by wild fires & empowered to take action to protect ourselves and our communities. Instead of informing all Americans of the danger posed by wild fire smoke in his prime time address, @POTUS @realDonaldTrump chose to spread election denialism, stoke partisan division, & then blame Canada for a disaster in a post on his personal website. Our top federal health official, @SecKennedy, has remained focused on his policy priorities & promoting interviews, instead of ramping up rapid response to a public health emergency, from @HHSGov amplifying @CDCemergency comms to working with the @WhiteHouse to amplify @EPA resources & get @CDCgov guidance on wild fires into every home. cdc.gov/wildfires/abou… There is no Senate-confirmed @CDCDirector to lead response. @NIHDirector_Jay has tweeted none of this. Only @epaleezeldin has gotten the word out with a link to the EPA’s remarkable website, but without the key public health guidance: if you must go outside in wildfire smoke, wear a respirator to protect your lungs against harmful particles that seriously damage your health. I hope to hear members of @whca ask why Trump fiddled on the Potomac while America burned and choked on toxic smoke & see power held to account tomorrow morning, @margbrennan @kwelkernbc @jaketapper @jonkarl — and then in Congress, @RepJamesComer @RepRobertGarcia. Why hasn’t @hhsgov manufacture & distributed pediatric respirators to protect America’s most precious resource — our children? Why is this weak comms & void in response acceptable?
