@SHGraves29 and I dive in deeper as to why #Prop36 is harmful to Californians and our communities, how it would force inequitable state spending, and how it could push more Californians into homelessness. For more ⤵️

"In California, undocumented folks paid nearly $8.5 BILLION in estimated state and local tax in 2022. That includes sales taxes, property taxes paid by homeowners or passed through to renters, personal and business income taxes, and more." ⤵️

NEW: Important report from @iteptweets shows the substantial tax contributions undocumented immigrants make to support federal, state and local public services — even though they are excluded from some of those very services. 🧵 itep.org/undocumented-i…

"For every $1 of ULA funding directed to the affordable housing projects...the City is able to leverage $9 of local, state, federal, and private funding for a total leveraged amount of $514.8 million." this is what equitable tax policy can do oxy.edu/about-oxy/comm…

California’s homeless population is aging rapidly, with adults 50+ making up nearly 40% of those needing shelter. Without swift and intentional policy action, California faces a future with a growing number of unhoused older adults as the state’s population ages.

❗️The Supreme Court just ruled to make it easier to jail or fine unhoused people for sleeping outside, even when adequate shelter or housing isn’t available. This will only make homelessness worse. Housing - not tickets, jail, or fines - ends homelessness.

Solving homelessness and our housing challenge takes all of us, from policymakers to community members, to understand that our systems are working, but they've been under-resourced for so long that it takes time and intentionality to get us there.

They're relatively new, one-time state investments, which makes it very difficult for our service providers to create short & long-term plans to prevent & end homelessness. Not to mention that housing takes time to build and some of these funds haven't gone out the door.

As we wait to see what the final #cabudget negotiations, a reminder that only roughly 1% of all initially budgeted state spending has gone toward #housing and #homelessness since 2018. Majority of which has been one-time funding. This is not how we ensure everyone has a home 🧵

The #CALeg plan also proposes an additional $1B for local flexible funds to address homelessness through HHAP. An exciting and critical deviation from the gov's budget that effectively proposed no significant state funding to address #homelessness in 2024-25 or beyond. #cabudget
California Budget & Policy Center@CalBudgetCenter

#CABudget Update: Yesterday, #CALeg leaders announced a joint legislative budget plan. 🧵 Overall, the Legislature’s plan takes a more responsible approach to resolving the state’s budget deficit & improves on the governor’s May Revision by rejecting many harmful cuts.

A statement of our values? Balancing the budget should NOT come at the expense of unhoused Californians or families on the brink of losing their homes. 📢 Cuts to #housing & #homelessness programs are❗️6 times larger❗️than cuts to state corrections. #cabudget
