@allenholub When you start a re-write the unspoken statement is that _nothing_ is a better starting point than what _is already running in production_. IME That's never true. The existing code is always a better starting point than nothing. Refactor, refactor, refactor.

Ppl who resist rewrites often talk about how hard it is to reach parity w/ the existing system. Fair point, but how much of the existing system is actually used? How much of it could be done better? Maybe you don't need parity. Replacing X with X is rarely a good use of time.

@MattJamesBoyle 💯 there are big products, like Cloudflare, whose team will benefit from multiple repos, indepedantly deployable microservices, etc, for sure. But most products don't need that additional cost and complexity of those approaches.

@mmmmmrob I think I could make a pretty compelling argument for Cloudflare not being a monolith. The rest sounds great though

Anyone here consider themself God-level knowledge of tsconfig.json for multiple local, related, modules within a monorepo? I have "TS2307: Cannot find module" issues that appear to use different paths for static analysis and at runtime. I could do with an hour of your time…

Keep your engineering skills polished. There are always more jobs for engineers than leaders; and leaders working in the trenches are highly valued in good cultures. Don't specialise; be flexible and you're more useful to more people.

Literally an exact graph of my programming career. Thankfully at the bottom right these days. Man did I ever overengineer some stuff in my early days.

I would love for Mastodon to become the twitter replacement. I have a couple of ideas I'd like to build that aren't possible on twitter, but that Mastodon would make possible. Let's all go there…
