Back in 2014 I was on a walking tour of Dresden and our guide kept referring to the firebombing destroying this or that building until an American girl in her 20s raised her hand to ask "sorry, who firebombed Dresden?" and the group fell so silent you could hear a pin drop
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

Dresden was rebuilt surprisingly recently

@ClarkeMicah @Cotic A solution to low emission transport, to reducing car use, to improving mobility especially of those older and less able. You clearly have absolutely no idea about what you are talking about. Are you a Daily Mail columnist as you do sound delusional?

.@cotic To what are electric bikes and scooters a solution? They are not green, they are not healthy, they are unsafe for their riders and anyone who gets in their way. All they 'solve' is the coming collapse in public transport.
Cotic@Cotic

@ClarkeMicah We can push for a better tech solution. It would hardly cost anything to add a gps and processor to force speed based on position, so could even force them to slow down on corners. This would be good for cars too. I think more public bikeparks and racing circuits needed.

@ClarkeMicah @Cotic They were promoted during 'Covid' along with the mysterious pop-up cycle lanes which is why they are seen as regime-friendly. Put on a mask, rev up your e-bike and you can think of yourself as virtuous as can be. Of course you should have access to cycle lanes - you're worth it.

@SamRemfry @ClarkeMicah I haven’t pretended anything, give me properly segregated routes on the road and I am happy, in fact I specifically said that in the previous post. To complain with specific reference to a motorbike which is not legal does however miss the point. I fear you do that knowingly…

Machines such as this can now be used freely on cycle lanes designed and built for pushbikes. This is a huge backward step, after decades of campaigns for segregation of muscle-powered bikes from engine-powered vehicles.

@SamRemfry @ClarkeMicah I don’t think so, having said that too much infra is substandard, campaign for better, the carcentric view forces too little space on pedestrians and cyclists that invites conflict. Solve this by getting some space from car lanes.

@SamRemfry @ClarkeMicah That’s a motorbike, totally illegal and used on a bike lane. Stop using it to campaign against bike lanes, that is similar to showing a race car on the M1 and saying we should get rid of the motorway 🤷‍♂️

@Davolaar Remember this, was at the game, Arsenal scored in what seemed 30 seconds and Liverpool scored deep in jury time after Johnson’s injury. And we broke down on the way back north… great times

What a Kit!🔥 Boss footage of the Reds running out to YNWA and an injury time leveller (superb replay angle too) from Dalglish in the FA Cup Semi-Final 2R at Villa Park 1980.

The Rolls-Royce RB211 was a perfect athlete. A 70s technological marvel, this is the jet that almost broke Rolls-Royce, driving it to near bankruptcy. A broad menu of technological firsts were attempted in this program, including carbon-fibre fan blades (which Rolls-Royce subsequently backed away from). The RB211's design legacy was the fabulously successful Trent family of engines that has made RR the aerospace colossus it is today. Not bad for a half-century bet! But the biggest hidden design legacy of RB211's ambition is the addition of a 3rd spool inside the engine: A shaft inside a shaft inside a shaft, each powered by, and powering, a different part of the turbofan. The design & manufacturing difficulties of this architecture, still unique to Rolls-Royce, were legion, but it paid off: Not only does a third shaft allow you to run the big fan from its own dedicated low-speed, low-pressure turbine stages, but it also adds impressive modularity to the engine design. This allowed RR to scale-up and optimize the Trent family for new airliners with impressive agility, which in turn let them successfully slug it out with their far larger American competitor, General Electric. Modularity matters.

Another shocking example of public money misuse: Hertfordshire County Council is planning to spend £1.5 million to push 20 mph limits on over half of urban roads. Instead of fixing potholes or investing in real safety measures, taxpayers are funding blanket speed zones. Supporters argue it improves safety and encourages walking/cycling, but drivers are frustrated by congestion and slower commutes. £1.5m could go much further improving actual infrastructure: repairing roads, upgrading crossings, or targeting high risk areas.

Tom Sizemore was tested for drugs every single day of filming. Steven Spielberg told him if he failed once, he’d be fired and the role would be recast. Tom Sizemore ended up giving us an unforgettable role in ‘Saving Private Ryan’.

@DraperMP @lewis_goodall Are you so bigoted as to not even think what you have said. I can assure you that when cycling you have a vested interest in your own safety. Note the 1,700+ killed every year by cars outweighs the 1 or 2 killed in collision with a cyclist by multiple orders of magnitude

@lewis_goodall Every one of those cyclists is a menace to elderly people trying to cross the street. They are more dangerous than automobile drivers because they don't look where they are going and take it for granted that they rule the road.

The Chancellor is going to prevent company price gouging ,when the main reason we have sky high energy prices is tax gouging by the government. Tax is 55% of the petrol price.

@OpenChiswickW4 What you're saying is like if apples went from £1/each to £2/each but oranges only went from £1/each to £1.50/each. The oranges didn't get cheaper, just got expensive less quickly than the apples. (i'm explaining this in good faith, if your argument isn't then disregard this)
